Indoor track: Here’s how local athletes fared in PVIAC Meet No. 2

NORTHAMPTON — The second PVIAC indoor track meet of the season took place on Sunday at Smith College, with Amherst, Frontier, Northampton, South Hadley, Hampshire and Holyoke participating throughout the day.
The Purple Knights and Raiders opened the day in the early meet before the Redhawks, Hurricanes, Blue Devils and Tigers and the Warriors competed in the late meet to round out competition.
Here’s a closer look at how each team did on Sunday.
Amherst
Ololara Baptiste won the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.66 seconds, Ruby Austin won the 300-meter dash in 44.13, Skylar Fox took first in the 1,000-meter run (3:14.54) and Claire Fortin won the long jump with a jump of 15 feet, 7 inches as the Hurricanes girls went 3-1 during the late meet on Sunday afternoon.
Amherst also won the 4x200-meter relay. Brooke Nedeau (12:10.94) grabbed third place in the 2 mile, Marit MacDonald (6:05.88) cruised into fourth place in the mile and Juliana Albo (10.25) finished fourth in the 55-meter hurdles. Several underclassmen for the ‘Canes put together strong performances to lift them to a near-perfect day, as Amherst only lost to Ludlow by two points.
Fortin (eighth, 47.55 in 300m), Genevieve Dole (eighth, 2:00.20 in 600 and seventh, 4-08.00 in high jump), Carolla Caroline (eighth, 3:59.84 in 1000), Ella Jamate (eighth, 6:21.87 in mile), Nedeau (ninth, 6:24.92 in mile) and Claire Kennedy (ninth, 14:28.82 in 2 mile) all cracked the top 10 in their respective events as well.
Northampton

The Blue Devils cruised to an unblemished 3-0 day during the late meet thanks to first-place finishes from Camilla Brewer (9.60) in the 55-meter hurdles and Maeve O’Neil in the 600-meter run (1:44.70) and 2 mile (11:59.82).
Right behind Maeve in the 2 mile was her sister Mairead, who came in shortly after in a time of 12:02.62, good for second place. Both O’Neil sister didn’t race (rest) in the first PVIAC meet back on Dec. 12. Northampton had a flurry of top-5 finishers, including Katherine Munson (third, 1:50 in 600m), Tess Geis-Benton (third, 3:32.66 in 1000m), Ella Hoogendyk (third, 4-08.00) in high jump, Allyson Busone (third, 27-05.50 in shot put), Emmi Warren (fifth, 13:50.24 in 2 mile), Brewer (fifth, 14-01.50 in long jump) and Northampton’s 4x200-meter relay team (third, 1:59.12).
Other top-10 finishers included Allison Edmands (sixth, 10.74 in 55m hurdles), Charlotte Shimpach (sixth, 6:14.08 in 1 mile) and Hoogendyk (ninth, 25-06.25 in shot put). The Blue Devils witnessed many sharp performances on Sunday.
South Hadley
Izzy Scott was the lone Tigers winner during the late meet Sunday, crossing the finish line first in the mile with a time of 5:45.94 as she led South Hadley to a 3-0 meet. Scott then cruised to a second-place finish in the 1000-meter run in 3:27.70 to cap off her impressive day.
Maggie Crawford took second in the 600-meter run with a solid time of 1:49.63 as well as fifth in the 55-meter hurdles (10.60). Abigail Gelinas grabbed third in the 300-meter dash (45.24) and fifth in the 55-meter dash (7.86), Addison Hill and Quinlin Cook finished 4-5 in the 1000-meter run, turning in times of 3:43.31 and 3:46.27, respectively and Grace Cooney finished fourth in the 2 mile (13:08.15) to round out South Hadley’s top-5 finishers.
Other Tigers participants who cracked the top 10 included: Emma Levreault (ninth, 48.26 in 300m and sixth, 26-00.25 in shot put), Samantha Caselden (ninth, 2:06.32 in 600m), Cook (seventh, 6:17.93 in mile, seventh, 25-09.50 in shot put and T-eighth, 4-04.00 in high jump), Margaret Healey (sixth, 13:51.98 in 2 mile), Hill (seventh, 14:00.50 in 2 mile), Kelcey Zraunig (T-eighth, 4-04.00 in high jump and seventh, 13-08.00 in long jump) and the South Hadley 4x200-meter relay team (fifth, 1:59.57).
Hampshire
The Raiders had no trouble in their trio of dual meets on Sunday, as their long-distance prowess powered them to big wins over Commerce, Greenfield and Pope Francis in the early meet.
Kathleen Barry won the 2 mile with a time of 12:18.43, as the sophomore dominated competition en route to crossing the line first. Keegan Butler grabbed second place in the 1000-meter run in 3:25.11, Talia Craig took fourth in the 2 mile (13:27.29), Bethany Tobiasz notched fifth in the 300-meter dash (47.68) and Gabriella Dybacki took home fifth in the 600-meter dash (1:53.13) as Hampshire had a handful of top-5 runners.
Those in the top 10 included Natalie Dunlap (sixth, 11.71 in 55m hurdles and sixth, 6:21.70 in the mile), Charlotte Letendre (sixth, 47.71 in 300m), Elisabeth Sturtevant (sixth, 1:53.50 in 600m), Rylee Joseph (seventh, 13-08.25 in long jump and 10th, 8.21 in 55m), Tobiasz (seventh, 4-02.00 in high jump), Maggie Lashway (seventh, 6:28.24 in mile), Rachel Hickox (eighth, 48.86 in 300m), Elizabeth Barry (ninth, 3:51.04 in 1000m), Sophia Lashway (ninth, 6:35.90 in mile), Emma McDonald (ninth, 14:05.46 in 2 mile) and Estella Steffenhagen (10th, 6:35.97 in mile).
Holyoke (early)
Kayshaly Garcia turned in a pair of top-3 finishes in the long jump (14-06.50) and shot put (25-05.75) to help the Purple Knights edge out Agawam as they went 1-2 during Sunday’s early meet at Smith College. Joining Garcia for a podium finish was Yasani Thompson, taking third in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:48.71.
Holyoke also had Sahara Irby (sixth, 8.11 in 55m), Siobhan Armstrong (sixth, 3:45.08 in 1000m and 10th, 13-07.00 in long jump), Selina Alicea (eighth, 11.95 in 55m hurdles), Jia-li Rodriguez (ninth, 11.97 in 55m hurdles) and Addison Rodriguez (ninth, 21-01.50 in shot put) finish inside the top 10 on Sunday.
The Purple Knights’ 4x200-meter relay team took fifth place.
Frontier
The Redhawks earned wins over Baystate Academy and Mohawk Trail, but suffered a loss to South Hadley on Sunday in the late meet.
Lilly Novak won the shot put (30-04.50), Abbigayle Grover took sixth in shot put (26-03.75), Josie Fosnot placed 10th in the 55-meter dash (8.20) and fourth in the 300-meter dash (45.84), Hannah Davis earned second in the 55-meter hurdles (9.96), Julia Morse finished in seventh in the 55-meter hurdles (10.85) and Madelyn Antes took 10th in the 300-meter dash (48.83). In the girls 600-meter run, Perla Ordaz took fourth (1:54.99), Phoebe Radner placed fifth (1:56.42), Claire McFarland came in sixth (1:57.15) and Sadie Griffin took 10th (2:06.86), while Sasha Malo came in sixth in the 1,000-meter run (3:51.50), Nora Sloan took seventh in the 1,000-meter run (3:55.81) and Liv Christensen took eighth in the 2 mile (14:09.12).
Mary Burt won the high jump (4-10.00) while Maia Christensen took fifth (4-08.00) in the high jump, Hannah Davis placed eighth in the long jump (13-07.50) and Ashley Rivard came in ninth in the long jump (13-04.00).
Hampshire
Oscar Schiff won the boys 2-mile race in 10:23.65 for the Raiders. Schiff secured the victory by more than seven seconds, ahead of second-place Henry Sacco from Longmeadow. Owen Cubi crossed the line next, taking third place at 10:35.80, as Hampshire had two finishers in the top three.
Cubi and Nicholas Jones earned third and fourth place, respectively, in the 1000-meter race. Cubi finished with a time of 2:52.65 while Jones posted a time of 2:55.06.
Aidan Conklin just missed a top-three finish in the 600-meter race, grabbing fourth place in 1:32.70.
In the mile, Freddy Rizos picked up sixth place (4:55.51) and Jack Laliberte got 10th place (5:14.03). The Raiders' 4x200 relay team recorded a time of 1:43.98 for a seventh-place finish.
Holyoke
The Purple Knights boys team had a pair of second-place finishers in Jayderson Lugo and Matthew Dumoulin.
Lugo competed in the 300-meter race and had a time of 38.27 seconds while Dumoulin ran the 55-meter race with a time of 6.85 seconds.
Two other Holyoke runners earned top-10 finishes in the 300 in Ryan Kennedy (fifth place, 38.52 seconds), and Xavier German (ninth place, 39.41 seconds). German also picked up an eighth-place finish in the 55 meters (7.10 seconds) and Kennedy posted a 10th-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles race (10.24 seconds) too.
In the shot put, Jaden Diaz threw for 38 feet, one inch, good for fifth place. The Purple Knights' 4x200 relay team placed in second, with a time of 1:37.53.
Amherst
Logan Alfandari cruised to victory in the boys shot put, measuring in with a throw of 53 feet, two inches. Hurricanes' Moniha Krouch was next in second place, throwing 38 feet, three inches.
Peter Nedeau won the 2-mile race in 10:30.75, while Calvin Cusick took home fifth place in 11:07.08. Myles Redington recorded second place during the mile with a time of 4:49.36.
The Hurricanes had three top-10 finishers in the 300-meter race in Owen Platt (second place, 37.64 seconds), Miles Jeffries (fourth place, 38.24 seconds) and Jose Munoz Gomez (fifth place, 38.95 seconds). Munoz Gomez also secured seventh place in the 55-meter race, with a time of 7.00 seconds.
Elias Katsaros concluded the 100-meter race in fifth place with a time of 2:59.69. Yoh Morita managed ninth place in 3:07.84. Amherst also received top-10 finishes from Sebasttian Stinson in the long jump (eighth place, 17 feet, four inches) and the 55-meter hurdles (10th place, 10 seconds).
The Hurricanes 4x200 relay team got second place in 1:37.59.
Northampton
Owen and Henry Daggett led the Blue Devils boys team as the brothers combined for two top-four finishes.
Owen Daggett grabbed third place in the 2-mile race in 10:51.36 while Henry Daggett picked up fourth place in the mile in 5:04.80. Shea O'Neil also earned ninth place in the 2-mile for Northampton with a time of 11:57.73. In the 600-meter race, Dashiell Kruckemeyer tallied fifth place in 1:35.16.
Isaiah Carnevale (3:03.69), Gus Frey (3:04.24) and Charlie Sidoti (3:08.10) finished in seventh, eighth and 10th place for the Blue Devils in the 1000-meter race.
Northampton's 4x200 relay team finished in eighth place in 1:43.90.
South Hadley
Nathan Hutchinson had a pair of top-five finishes for the Tigers boys team, including a second-place finish in the 1000-meter race in 2:53.58. Hutchinson's fifth-place finish in the mile (5:16.10) was followed closely behind by Trevor Sullivan (5:17.45).
Sullivan also collected seventh place in the 2-mile race with a time of 11:13.65. Jack Boyer rounded out the top-10 at 12:14.46.
Jameson Webber and Matt Gillis obtained fifth and sixth place for South Hadley in the 55-meter hurdles race with times of 8.97 seconds and 9.01 seconds, respectively. Gillis grabbed fourth place in both the long jump (19 feet, 1 inch) and high jump (5 feet, 6 inches) as well.
Ben Gillis (seventh place, 5 feet) and Lincoln Belsky (ninth place, 4 feet, 10 inches) also cracked the top 10 and Jack Chagnon compiled a ninth-place finish in the 600-meter race (1:40.31) and sixth-place finish in the long jump (17 feet, 7.5 inches).
The Tigers' 4x200 relay team took fourth place in 1:39.90.
Frontier
Ben Cachiguango won the 55-meter hurdles, took fourth in the 55 meters and finished in seventh in the 300 meters to pace the Redhawks. Cachiguango's winning time in the hurdles was 7.99 seconds, while his 55-meter time was 6.86 seconds. Cachiguango crossed the line during the 300 meters in 39.11 seconds.
Tegan Dexter wasn't far behind Cachiguango in the 300 meters, placing ninth in 40.70 seconds. Tavo Vincent-Warner ran to a ninth-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.82 seconds.
Frontier had two in the top-four following the 600-meter race as Adrien Pazmandy (second place, 1:31.43) and Augustus Radner (fourth place, 1:33.89), each did well.
Oliver Brown picked up third place in both the 1000-meter race and high jump with a time of 2:57.59 and a height of 5 feet, 6 inches.
In the shot put, Ezra Rich threw for 36 feet, 5.50 inches for fourth place for the Redhawks, while Julian Adams earned 10th place with a throw of 32 feet, 9.75 inches. Other top-10 finishers for Frontier included Adam Paul in the mile (ninth place, 5:26.79), and Hengxi Yue in the 2-mile race (11:42.58). The 4x200 relay team earned third place with a time of 1:39.17.
