High schools: Anna Scagel, Smith Academy take down St. Mary’s in Class D quarterfinals

On the road in Westfield on Thursday, the Smith Academy girls soccer team kept its western Mass. tournament prospects alive.

The fifth-seeded Falcons punched a ticket to the Western Mass. Class D semifinals after taking down No. 4 St. Mary’s, 1-0, in the quarterfinal round.

Anna Scagel scored the game’s only goal, coming midway through the second half to break a scoreless game. Goalie Madison Zononi stopped all six shots that came her way to record the clean sheet.

Smith Academy (12-2-3) will travel to play at top-seeded Palmer in the semifinal round, Saturday at 11 a.m.

Class B quarters

Pope Francis 10, Easthampton 0 – The top-seeded Cardinals received six goals from star Isabella Meadows en route to the quarterfinal win in Springfield.

Addison Barr made 19 saves in net for the eighth-seeded Eagles.

Northampton 6, Pittsfield 0 – The Blue Devils are state tournament-bound.

Needing to win a pair of non-playoff games after just missing the western Mass. tournament, Northampton beat Amherst Wednesday and followed that with a convincing win on Thursday over the Generals.

Northampton (9-9) led 2-0 at halftime. Olive Little scored twice, while other scorers for the Devils were Olivia Busone, Willow Claps, Lilah Sage and Maddison Aimi-Starkoski. Goalie Ella Hoogendyk made one save.

Class A quarters

Ludlow 3, Northampton 0 – The eighth-seeded Blue Devils battled on the road at Lusitano Stadium, ultimately falling to No. 1 Ludlow, 3-0, in the quarterfinals on Thursday night.

The Lions will meet No. 4 Agawam in the semis on Saturday.

Class D quarters

Smith Academy 2, PV Christian 0 — On the road in Springfield, the sixth-seeded Falcons received a pair of second half goals Thursday to waltz into the semifinals.

Cajun Benson broke a scoreless game against No. 3 Pioneer Valley Christian with a 61st-minute tally from Ben Hudzik. Harry LaFlamme made it 2-0 when he chested home a free kick from Matt Scagel to provide some insurance.

Jake Wilcox made three saves in net for Smith (11-2-4), which will host No. 7 Granby in the Class D semifinals on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Smith Academy 2, Amherst 1 – Bella Gavron and Alexa Jagodzinski tallied for the Falcons, which rallied for a 2-1 win on Thursday.

Cat Kokoski assisted on Jagodzinski’s game winner which came with 1:40 remaining in regulation. Goalie Madison Didonna-Renner made four saves in net. It was the final game for Falcons seniors Kokoski and Alexis Selig.

Zoey Candito scored for the Hurricanes.

Girls volleyball

Smith Voc 3, Greenfield 0 – Heidymar Diaz-Lopez put down three kills and five aces in the Vikings’ 25-13, 25-15, 25-4 sweep. Irelyn Marcoux had three aces and three kills, and Roma Bentrewicz went for two aces and five assists.

Girls soccer

Hampshire 3, Monument 2 — Maisie Bowler scored all three goals for the Raiders, which earned a spot in the Class B semifinals thanks to a 3-2 quarterfinal win on Wednesday night.

Anna Puttick notched two assists for the Raiders, and goalie Makena Rogalski made five saves.

Northampton 4, Amherst 2 — An Olivia Busone hat trick lifted the Blue Devils to a huge win over Amherst on Wednesday.

Allie Sullivan also scored for Northampton, and assisted on two of Busone’s strikes. Giselle Ohm made three saves in net.

Ivorie Arguin tallied twice for Amherst, and Neena Chinappa made five saves.
