High schools: Aaron Renaud’s goal lifts Smith Vocational past PVCICS, 1-0 (PHOTOS)

Two of the top 15 teams in the most recent MIAA Division 5 Power Rankings clashed in Northampton on Wednesday afternoon.
Host Smith Vocational, ranked sixth, scored the game’s only goal when Aaron Renaud found the back of the net with an assist from Jacob Maloney to propel the Vikings to a 1-0 Tri-County League boys soccer win over Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School.
The visiting Dragons (10-5-1), ranked 15th in the most recent release, received one save in net from Richard Ang and three from Damian Loinaz.
Smith Voc (12-2-1) goalie Zach Bramucci stopped all six shots he faced for the clean sheet.
Both teams have already sewn up state tournament berths, and will likely each host Western Mass. quarterfinal round games next week.
Granby 3, Southwick 0 — Gavin Moreno netted a pair of goals, and the Rams continued their winning ways with a 3-0 victory on Wednesday.
Granby (9-1-5), which led 2-0 at halftime, also received a goal and an assist from Jaxton Roy. Colin Murdock and Brandon Carillion added assists, and goalie Daniel Santiago made one save in net.
Belchertown 2, Minnechaug 0 — A goal in each half powered the Orioles to their third win in a row on Wednesday in Belchertown.

Tanner Lockwood struck first for Belchertown (8-5-3), burying a shot off a corner kick from Trevor Weiss in the 15th minute to stake the hosts to a 1-0 lead.
Ian McDonald tacked on some insurance late, as Lockwood assisted on a McDonald goal in the 78th minute that sealed the deal.
Hampshire 2, Mount Greylock 0 – The Raiders improved to a perfect 12-0-2 on the season after pitching their seventh shutout of the season and fourth in a row.
Hampshire hasn’t allowed a goal since Oct. 5, and the club has allowed just one goal total in the month of October.
Aidan Moynahan and Dan Martin tallied in the win, with assists credited to Aidan Miklasiewicz and Colin Cahill. Goalie Colin Holt made three saves for the shutout.
Belchertown 3, West Springfield 0 – Goals from Isabella Cebula, Laura Cote and Karyna Rondeau lifted the Orioles to a 3-0 independent win on Wednesday night in Belchertown.
Assists were registered by Brooke Stelmokas and Mya Philpott, and goalie Morgan Sambor stopped four shots in net for the shutout.
The Orioles (10-3-1) can clinch the County League title outright with a win Friday at Franklin Tech.
Belchertown 158, Amherst 208 — Belchertown’s Michael Murray fired a round of 36 for medalist honors at Amherst Golf Club on Wednesday.
Jared Haynes shot 40 for the balanced Orioles, which also received strong rounds from Brady Jolly (41), Henry Poissant (41) and Cal Orzech (41).
Amherst’s Nate Ziomek shot 45 and Ben Scott posted a 48 at home.
Hopkins 162, Southwick 178 — Ryley Regan again captured medalist honors for the Golden Hawks, shooting a 3-over 39 at Holyoke Country Club to help her side to a 10-5 record.
Jack Dyjach (42) and James Burke (43) were close behind for Hopkins Academy.
Smith Academy 2, Frontier 1 — Caitlin Graves scored a late winner for the Falcons, helping the hosts rally from an early deficit to snag a 2-1 win on Wednesday in Hatfield.
The goal was the second of the outing for Graves, and both were assisted by Anna Scagel.
Frontier’s Maddie Bennett staked the visitors to an early lead with an assist from Maddie Fagan. Madison Zononi and Vivian Higuera made four saves apie ce for Smith Academy in net, and Jazzy Hayes recorded 12 saves for Frontier.
Monson 4, Northampton 2 – The undefeated Mustangs scored three times in the first half and held off Northampton for a Central League victory.
Olive Little and Teagan McDonald scored for the Blue Devils (7-8), and Alysha Parshall-Matylas had an assist. Annalise Oravec and Giselle Ohm each made three saves in net.
The two teams meet against in Northampton on Monday.
Smith Voc 8, Duggan 0 – Eight different Vikings scored goals in a balanced, dominant effort on Wednesday night in Northampton.
Avonna Wickles, Julianis Suarez, Monique Fredette, Erin Miller, Tessa Boisvert, Gracie Thompson, Caitlin Willard and Daelin Murdock all tallied for Smith Voc. Megan Courtney notched two assists, while other helpers were recorded by Jayanna Daniels, Suarez, Thompson, Miller and Boisvert.
Courtney made two saves in net.
Amherst 3, Central 0 — Lauren Joy finished with nine aces and nine kills to help the Hurricanes earn a 25-11, 26-24, 25-20 sweep over the Golden Eagles in an Eastern League contest on Wednesday.
Shannon Klaes put down eight kills, Sophie Kawall tallied four kills while Talia Sadiq and Abigail Como each had three aces for Amherst.
Easthampton 3, East Longmeadow 1 — Kayley Downie finished with six kills and 35 digs as the Eagles walked away with a 25-22, 18-25, 25-22, 25-22 win over the Spartans on Wednesday.
Erin Teague (four kills, 30 assists, four aces, seven digs), Kaelin Damon (seven kills, five aces, 20 digs), Kierra Carson (six kills, six digs) and Katelyn Martin (six kills, seven digs) played well in the win.
Lenox 3, Belchertown 1 – Chrissy Santiago went for 11 kills and 10 digs, but the Orioles dropped a road match at Lenox on Wednesday.
Set scores were 25-23, 25-14, 15-25, 25-17.
Paige Magner and Ava Shea had five kills apiece for Belchertown, and Vivian Ross dished out 23 assists.
Frontier 3, Minnechaug 0 – Senior Night in South Deerfield celebrated Frontier’s Caroline Deane, Gabby Adams, Kate DeMaio and Allie Pierce on Wednesday, and also marked the final regular season home match for longtime head coach Sean MacDonald, who will step down after this season.
The Redhawks were impressive, cruising to a 25-10, 25-19, 25-18 sweep at Goodnow Gymnasium.
Deane led the offense with 15 kills, while DeMaio followed with nine and Adams tossed in eight. Pierce had 29 assists and 13 digs, and Frontier racked up 21 aces as a team.
The Hawks (13-5) will close out their regular season Friday at Ludlow.
Girls soccer
Easthampton 5, Hopkins 0 – The Eagles took a 3-0 lead into halftime and never looked back behind two goals and an assist from Ana Growhoski.
Ella Belcher-Timme, Christine Raymond, and Samone Young all scored as well for Easthampton. Goalie Addie Barr grabbed six saves, while Hopkins keeper Cassidy Fyden stopped 12 shots.
Smith Academy 2, Ware 2 – Falcons goalie Madison Zononi had 13 saves on 15 shots, and Anna Scagel and Emily Pearl each scored a goal in Smith Academy’s draw with Ware on Tuesday.
Isabella Letourneau and Emma Moynihan tallied assists on the two goals for the Falcons.
Boys soccer
Frontier 5, South Hadley 0 – Two second-half tallies from Rosco Palmer led the Redhawks’ four goals over the final 40 minutes in their shutout win over the Tigers.
Nico Fasulo, Max Rajballie, Kasiac Yath each found the back of the net once for Frontier, and Aidan Valderrama picked up two assists. South Hadley goalie Noah Carillon had 14 saves in the loss.
Boys cross country
Granby 26, Pope Francis 29
Granby 39, Southwick 39 – Nate Hutchinson (17:44) led the parade of pers onal bests for the Rams, winning his race by over a minute over the nearest competitor. Next up was Granby’s Nate Benson, who was so close to breaking the 20-minute mark, crossing the finish line at 20:02 – a new PR.
Colby Carleton broke the 21 minutes for the first time this season at 20:38 while Travis Sullivan (21:20) and Pax Stark (22:42) rounded out the scoring.
Girls cross country
Pope Francis 22, Granby 35
Southwick 25, Granby 33 – Addy Hill placed second overall and first for the Rams with a t ime of 22:44. Quinlin Cook was close behind, turning in a personal best of 23:00.
Aurora Lee was next for Granby, running to a season best time of 30:16, which was followed by Audree Flowers (31:07) in her second best run this season. Stella Siudak and Rowan Cook were big personal-time improvers, breaking the tape in 33:32 and 34:29, respectively.
