The top-seeded PVCICS boys tennis team looked the part in its Western Mass. Class C opener against No. 4 Frontier on Tuesday. 

The Dragons swept all five matches, advancing to the finals with a 5-0 victory at Hampshire College. PVCICS will face No. 3 Lee in the finals at a date and time to be determined. 

Aidan Cleary earned a win in No. 1 singles (6-0. 6-1), Lee Ferguson took No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-0) while James Scott won in No. 3 singles (6-0, 6-2) for PVCICS.

To close things out, Derek Ye and Devan Ye won in No. 1 doubles (6-3, 6-1) while Clayton English and Gabe Loinaz took No. 2 doubles (6-3, 6-0). 

Class B semis

No. 3 Belchertown 3, No. 2 Pope Francis 2 – The Orioles’ depth propelled them to an eighth Western Mass. final in the last nine years.

Luke Dudek earned a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles, and Belchertown swept the doubles points to earn a tight road win in Springfield on Tuesday.

The first doubles team of Cam Kaczowka and Tyler Burrows cruised to a quick 6-0, 6-0 win for the Orioles, while the second doubles pairing of Jake Gormely and Mason Pobieglo grinded out a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 win.

Class A quarters

No. 3 Agawam 12, No. 6 Amherst 0 – The Brownies held serve at home, advancing to the Class A semifinals with a shutout win on Tuesday.

Agawam will play No. 2 East Longmeadow on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

The Hurricanes dropped to 10-8 overall and will play a non-playoff game later this week before next week’s MIAA Division 2 state tournament.

Class B quarters

No. 5 Easthampton 9, No. 4 Monument Mountain 6 — Trailing 5-4 after four innings, the Eagles’ bats got to work. Christine Raymond, Summer Routhier and Madison Urban all drove in runs in the top of the fifth, and Easthampton earned a spot in the Class B semifinals with a 9-6 win on the road in Great Barrington on Tuesday.

Easthampton (10-9) will play at top-seeded Pittsfield at a date and time to be determined.

The Eagles tacked on two more insurance runs in the sixth, aided by an RBI triple from McKenzie McCarthy.

Rosie Follet struck out seven in a complete-game outing for Easthampton, allowing just three hits. McCarthy finished 3-for-4 at the plate while Ana Growhoski, Sophia Faginski, Makenna Slate and Routhier all had two hits.

Class D quarters

No. 2 Lee 2, No. 7 Gateway 0 – The Gators were unable to break through in a close road loss to the Wildcats on Tuesday.

Non-playoff games

Granby 15, Pathfinder 3  — Meredith Bartosz recorded a pair of hits and RBIs while Cassie Flaherty tallied three hits and an RBI in the Rams’ win over the Pioneers on Tuesday. 

Jordyn Placzek cracked two singles, a double and two RBIs, Katie Grabherr doubled twice and knocked in three runs while Ellie Szlosek and Mabel Carillon each had a hit and an RBI for Granby. 

 Boys volleyball

Class C semis

No. 2 Ware 3, No. 3 Frontier 0 — There will be a new Class C champion, as the defending champion Redhawks suffered a 25-17, 25-22, 25-20 loss to host Ware on Tuesday in the semifinals. 

Aleks Carey put down 14 kills, Jack Carey smashed eight kills, Will Reading tallied two kills while Tavo Vincent-Warner put down three aces and dished 25 assists for Frontier. 

No. 1 Granby 3, No. 4 PV Christian 1 – The Rams rallied from a set down to earn a spot in the Class C final.

Granby earned a 23-25, 25-12, 25-12, 25-21 victory on Tuesday. The Rams will play No. 2 Ware in the title match on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Chicopee Comp.

Michael Swanigan put down 18 kills, Jake Gagnon smashed eight kills and dished 24 assists, Braeden Gallagher tallied five kills and six assists while Nathan Walsh had four kills for Granby.

Girls tennis

Mohawk Trail 3, Frontier 2 — Aylen Shaw won in No. 3 singles (6-0, 6-3) while Esther Ehle and Kayla Fagan earned an abbreviated 6-1, 2-0 win in No. 2 doubles in the Redhawks’ loss to the Warriors on Tuesday in Buckland. 

Girls lacrosse

Lee 18, Granby 12 — Kalli White tallied six goals in the Rams’ loss to the Wildcats on Tuesday. 

Ava-Elizabeth Loughman, Abigail Landry, Brenna Moreno, Kelly-Lynne Kennedy and McKenna Zumbruski each scored while Faith Ramos made seven saves for Granby. 

Boys lacrosse

Belchertown 16, Granby 6 – Nico St. George scored five goals and added an assist to lead the Orioles to a runaway victory in the regular season finale.

Vinny Ting (two goals, three assists), Charlie Fijal (two goals, two assists), RylanQueiros (one goal, three assists) and Caleb Reardon (two goals, one assist) also recorded multiple points for Belchertown.

Baseball

Belchertown 12, Smith Vocational 2 (6) — Joshua Misiaszek doubled, tripled, singled and drove in two runs while Ryan Gould tallied a hit and five RBIs, with the Orioles pulling away with a win over the Vikings in Belchertown Tuesday. 

Carsten Matthews, Evan Ferguson and Kamden Houle each had two hits and an RBI in the win. Jared Baer singled and doubled while James Lavallee doubled and drove in a run for Smith Vocational. 

Late Monday results

Boys lacrosse

Belchertown 13, Chicopee Comp 1 — Nico St. George scored six goals for the Orioles in a lopsided win on Monday.

Vincent Ting (2G, 3A) and Caleb Reardon (1G, 2A) also had multi-point games for Belchertown.

West Side 9, Northampton 8 (OT) — Jack Carpenter scored four goals while Minti Peterson and Jackson Oravec each netted a pair for the Blue Devils.

Henry Fallon made 17 saves in net for Northampton.

Girls lacrosse

Belchertown 18, Chicopee Comp 4 — Paige Magner found the back of the net nine times to go with eight draw controls in the Orioles’ rout on Monday night.

Madysen LePage tallied four goals and two assists for Belchertown, and Emma Almeida made five saves.

Girls tennis

Belchertown 5, West Side 0 — Ava Shea (6-0, 6-0), Anna Stamp (7-5, 6-7, 10-2) and Amanda Murray (6-4, 7-5) swept singles matches for the Orioles on Monday. The first doubles team of Mia Corish and Emalee Chaisson (6-4, 7-5) and the second doubles tandem of Kasey Gibbons and Alexa Karabetsos (6-2, 6-2) also notched straight-set wins.

Boys volleyball

South Hadley 3, Duggan 0 — Sam Morozov amassed 18 digs and Junoon Giridhar dished out 19 assists to go with 13 digs in the Tigers’ 25-22, 25-16, 25-22 sweep.

Beau Briere and Jonathon Grim each put down seven kills for Sout hHadley, and combined for 15 aces.

Youth sports

Amherst Little League

Amherst Red Sox 8, Amherst Orioles 7 – Led by Julian Park’s two hits and two runs scored, the Red Sox used timely hitting to pull out to a lead in the third and fourth innings on Sunday. Defensively, web gems by Sam Adams-Margotta and Johnny Siano limited big innings by the Orioles. In his pitching debut, Isaac Lawrence-Slavas closed out the game with a two-out save in the sixth inning.

For the Orioles, Walker Austin led the way with a three-run homer in the first inning along with a barehanded play at shortstop to limit a Red Sox rally. Ian Kim also had two hits and two runs scored.
