MIAA tourneys: Amherst volleyball coach Kacey Schmitt records 350th career win in Round of 16 sweep of Danvers

No. 4 Amherst girls volleyball head coach Kacey Schmitt picked up her 350th win in style as the Hurricanes sailed past No. 13 Danvers in the MIAA Division 3 Round of 16 on Monday night.
Amherst has now swept opponent in 14 of its 18 wins this season. The ‘Canes will host the winner of Tuesday’s No. 5 Holliston and No. 12 Greater New Bedford in the state quarterfinal round at a date and time to be announced.
Set scores were 25-20, 25-17, 25-17.
Ruby Austin (10), Shannon Klaes (seven), and Lauren Joy (seven) combined for 24 of Amherst’s 33 kills to lead the team offensively. Annabel Ogden continued her strong play during the home stretch of the season with 26 assists, eight digs, and an ace, and Liza Beigel’s tremendous defense was on display once again with 19 digs while chipping in five assists and four aces.
Talia Sadiq and Emerson Joyce had 10 digs and one ace apiece, Austin added 13 digs and three aces, and Sophie Kawall put down five kills in a terrific team effort from the Hurricanes.
Schmitt described her milestone win as “sweet,” and she and the ‘Canes hope to add some more to that total before the season comes to a close.
Frontier 3, Lowell Catholic 0 – The 19th-seeded Crusaders continued to hang around with the No. 3 Redhawks, digging out spikes and keeping the ball in play to stay in the match. In the end, the defending state champs rallied late in the opening two sets before finding a rhythm in the third to advance to the state quarters with a 3-0 Div. 4 Round of 16 sweep.
Frontier advanced to play the winner of No. 6 Joseph Case and No. 11 Millbury, which play on Tuesday.

Caroline Deane led the way with 16 kills in the win. Gabby Adams provided six kills and two aces, Olivia Machon finished with five kills and two aces, Kate DeMaio tallied three kills, Emilie Candelaria put down five aces while Allie Pierce recorded five aces and 30 assists in the win.
Div. 4 Round of 32
No. 1 South Hadley 4, No. 33 St. Paul Diocesan 1 — The Tigers tallied two goals in each half and cruised to a win in the Division 4 Round of 32 on Monday evening.
Allison Fleury recorded two goals for South Hadley, Lauren Marjanski added a goal and an assist, and Madelyn McArdle found the back of the net as well. Rachel Yabra also registered an assist while Drew Alley stopped three of four shots in the win.
The No. 1 seed in Div. 4 started its postseason journey in style, and the Tigers next host No. 17 Manchester Essex on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the Round of 16.
Div. 5 Round of 32
No. 12 Palmer 3, No. 21 Hopkins 1 — Helen Vissas put a cap to her stellar junior year with another goal to bring her season total to 19, but it wasn’t enough for the Golden Hawks to get past Palmer in the Division 5 state tournament.
Maggie Potter registered the assist for Hopkins while Emmy Schmidt grabbed 14 saves in a strong effort in goal. The Panthers offense was just too much to handle as three different players found the back of the net. Palmer plays No. 5 Douglas in the Round of 16 on Thursday.
No. 2 Monson 7, No. 31 Smith Voc 1 — The Vikings put forth a good showing as a team, but the powerhouse Mustangs overwhelmed Smith Voc to put and end to its season on Monday.
Smith Voc finished the year with a quality 12-3-2 record including an 11-game streak without a loss in the middle of the season. Monson will host No. 18 Bromfield on Wednesday in the Round of 16.
Boys soccer
Frontier 6, Tyngsborough 0 — The Redhawks went into halftime up 2-0 and soared for four more in the second to advance to the Round of 16 for the third consecutive season. Nico Fasulo tallied twice while Chanmin Son, Aiden Valderrama, Ian Paciorek, and Gus Radner each scored once for Frontier.
Fasulo, Paciorek, Eric Larsson, and Max Rajballie registered assists, and keeper Owen Babb stopped all five shots sent his way in the win.
Girls soccer
David Prouty 3, Granby 1 — After heading into the break with a one-goal advantage, the Rams were unable to hang on as their season came to a close in the Round of 32 on Sunday.
Brenna Moreno scored the lone Granby goal off an assist from Sophia Gagnon, and Meredith Bartosz recorded seven saves in goal. The Rams finished their season 9-12 having won five of their last seven contests.
