Deadlocked for 80 minutes, the Hampshire Regional and Ipswich girls soccer teams needed overtime to decide a spot in the MIAA Division 4 quarterfinals on Wednesday night.

In the end, it was the coastal Tigers that escaped back across the Commonwealth with a road victory. No. 26 Ipswich netted the game-winning goal with 3 minutes, 51 seconds remaining in the first OT to secure a 2-1 victory in the Round of 16 at Dorunda Field.

Ipswich advanced to play at No. 2 Sutton in the state semifinals.

No. 10 Hampshire scored the game’s first goal, taking a 1-0 lead on a beautiful cross and header with 24:20 left in the first half. Anna Puttick dribbled down the left side of the field and crossed a left-footed ball to the back post, where Maisie Bowler headed it into the back of the net.

The Tigers (8-12-1) found the equalizer less than 10 minutes later, when Stella Whitten pounced on a rebound in front of the Hampshire goal and made it a 1-1 game with 15:22 to play before half.

The game stayed scoreless into the chilly evening, ultimately ending with Ipswich’s game-winning OT strike.

Hampshire finished its season 9-8-2 overall.

No. 1 South Hadley 3, No. 17 Manchester Essex 0 – Lauren Marjanski continued to do Lauren Marjanski things on Wednesday evening.

The senior forward buried another two scores and added an assist as she was responsible for all three of the Tigers’ goals in their shutout win over Manchester Essex.

South Hadley will host No. 8 West Bridgewater on Sunday at 5 p.m. in the Division 4 quarterfinal round.

Allison Fleury also put home a goal for South Hadley, and defender Gianna Roy chipped in an assist to get in on the scoring action.

Drew Alley – to no surprise – was stellar in the box for the Tigers, just as she has been all season. Alley recorded six more saves to notch her 13th shutout this year.

Div. 4 Round of 16

Frontier 2, Case 1 (2OT) — With a penalty shootout looming in hostile territory, Ashley Taylor and the Frontier field hockey team took matters into their own hands on Wednesday.

Taylor buried the game-winning goal with just three minutes remaining in double overtime, lifting the 12th-seeded Redhawks to a wild 2-1 victory over No. 5 Joseph Case in the MIAA Division 4 Round of 16 in Swansea.

It was the sixth consecutive victory for Frontier (11-6-4), which will look to stay upset-minded when it travels to No. 4 Sutton in the state quarterfinal round on Saturday at noon.

“We talk all the time about leaving it all on the field and really the mental component of this game... you have to be focused,” Frontier coach Missy Mahar said. “Collectively it took us a part of the season to figure some things out, but it’s really nice to see this team get this far and have this chance. They work extremely hard and I love to see them succeed.”

Taylor finished off an assist from Macy DeMaio in a scrum of players standing in front of the Case goal to seal the deal in double OT.

DeMaio scored the tying goal in the third quarter, helping the Hawks rally from an early 1-0 deficit when she buried an unassisted marker. It stayed that way through a 10-minute scoreless 7-on-7 overtime period and almost a second OT frame before Taylor won it.

“I think this game really came down to a lot of grit,” Mahar said. “We were down 1-0 in the first quarter and they just kept fighting back.”

Next up is a Sutton (15-3-2) team that just got past Greenfield in overtime in the Round of 16 on Tuesday. A spot in the Final Four is on the line in central Mass.

No. 24 Saint John Paul II 3, No. 8 Easthampton 2 – The Eagles fell in a decisive fifth set, 15-11, as their season came to an end on Wednesday.

Saint John Paull II advanced to play top-seeded Mount Greylock in the state quarterfinal round. Easthampton finished its season 16-7.

Kaelin Damon put down a team-high 13 kills to lead the Eagles offense and also added nine digs and a block on the defensive end in a strong two-way effort. Kierra Carson (eight) and Katelyn Martin (eight) struck for a combined 16 kills as well as combining for 17 digs.

Erin Teague stepped up to the tall task of facilitating the offense by tallying 30 assists while chipping in three aces and three kills of her own. Teague, a senior, was a key component of the Easthampton lineup all season and capped off her career with a solid performance at home.
