High Schools: Alexa Jagodzinski’s late goal propels Smith Academy field hockey past Mahar

As the seconds ticked down between Mahar and Smith Academy, it seemed the Valley league rivals might play to a 1-1 stalemate.

But with one minute, 20 seconds left, Alexa Jagodzinski scored her second goal of the afternoon – the game winner – to seal a bounceback win for the Falcons after three consecutive losses. Smith Academy now sits at 5-3 on the season.

Marissa Belina assisted on Jagodzinski’s first goal and Bell Gavron also turned in a strong performance. Goalie Madison Didonna-Renner made eight saves.

Smith Academy is in action next on Friday at Southwick at 4 p.m.

Belchertown 4, Amherst 1 – Molly Mazzaferro, Addison DiBona, Lila Roy and Kian Roy all scored for Belchertown, while Kina Roy tallied three assists and Gianna Zenon added one more. Josephine Becker scored Amherst’s goal. ‘Canes goalie Eden Polak had 16 saves and Orioles goalie Morgan Sambor made one.

Turners Falls 3, Northampton 2 – Ella LaRouch scored in the fourth quarter to break a 2-2 tie and drop the hosts to 3-5-1. Northampton’s Maya Berman-Lagier scored and added an assist to Lan Detenber. Blue Devils goalie Lanaiya Rodriguez made two saves in the first half and Charlotte Johnson-Mersack made four saves in the second half.

Hampshire 4, Palmer 0 – Ryleigh Fennessy, Neely Rondeau, Holly Kowalxyzk and Chloe Moynihan scored a goal each, powered by an assist from Fennessy and two from Rondeau. Goalie Rylie Simmons made three saves.

Boys soccer

West Springfield 4, Holyoke 0 – Landon Koziara made 13 saves for the Purple Knights.

Granby 7, Mahar 0 – The Golden Hawks moved to 5-0-1 with another big win, the fifth time they’ve scored at least six goals in a game this year. Sadie Cyr scored a hat trick, Helen Vissas scored a brace and Olivia Earle and Layni Bailey also scored. Bailey picked up a pair of assists, and Aurora Moynihan and Gabriela Perez also added helpers.

Ware 2, Smith Academy 1 – The Falcons held a 1-0 halftime lead thanks to a goal from Nataly Slysz on an assist from Caitlin Graves, but dropped to 4-3 with their third straight defeat. Madison Zononi made a dozen saves in net.

Golf

Amherst 183, Ware 219 – Amherst picked up its third straight win behind a strong 36 from Ben Scott, who outshot all other golfers by 11 strokes. Nate Ziomek followed behind with a 47 and Callum Bohne and Graham Von Geissen shot 50s.

South Hadley 156, Northampton 159; Northampton 159, Chicopee Comp 190 – For the second time this season, South Hadley edged Northampton by fewer than five strokes, powered by a 32 from Ryan MacGregor, which led all golfers by four strokes at the Northampton Country Club on Wednesday afternoon. South Hadley’s Caiden Drohan shot a 38, and Jameson Webber, Liam Yates and Ryley McMahon all shot 43s. The Tigers are now 9-1, with their only loss coming to Belchertown on Aug. 29.

 Reilly Fowles led the Blue Devils with a 36, followed by Jack Carpenter (40), Aiden Keeling-Lococo (41) and Jamie Fowler (42). After splitting its matches on Wednesday, Northampton is 8-4.

Boys cross country

Hampshire 18, Granby 40; Granby 15, Palmer 50 – Nate Hutchinson led the Rams with a third-place finish, followed by Trevor Sullivan in seventh, Colby Carleton in 10th, Nate Benson in 11th and Avery Gagnon in 12th.

Girls cross country

Hampshire 19, Granby 41; Granby 15, Palmer 50 – Addy Hill led Granby in fourth and Grace Cooney was right behind in fifth. Josie Curran placed 11th and Adelynn Zimmer placed 12th.

Boys soccer

South Hadley 4, Lenox 3 — The Tigers’ big three was on display in a high-scoring victory over the Millionaires on Tuesday, as Carlos David (one goal, two assists) recorded three points while Nolan Masse (two goals) and Matt Gillis (one goal, one assist) each had two points to round out South Hadley’s scoring.

Noah Carillon stopped five shots in goal in the win.

Northampton 1, Chicopee 1 — Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Blue Devils got a clutch penalty from striker Jasper Cantor to knot things up late in the game – which would remain tied the rest of the way.

Salem Gregory recorded four saves for Northampton.

Golf

South Hadley 165, Chicopee 233 — Ryan MacGregor carded the low round of the match with a 37, and all other Tigers scorers broke 45 in a blowout win on Tuesday.

Matt Blaser (42), Jameson Webber (42) and Ryley McMahon (43) each turned in strong rounds for South Hadley.

East Longmeadow 147, Northampton 166 — The Blue Devils put up a respectable 166, but the Spartans were on fire on Tuesday afternoon, with all four of their golfers cracking 40.

Northampton’s Reilly Fowles was the match medalist with a 35 while Aiden Keeling-Lococo shot a 43.
