High schools: Amherst girls secure first Berkshire Nordic Ski League win in program history

It was a historic opening meet to the 2024 cross country ski season for Amherst on Monday night.
For the first time in program history, the Hurricanes placed first in a Berkshire League meet, tying with Mount Greylock under the lights at Butternut Mountain in Great Barrington.
River Wolaver (fifth place, 14:42), captain Zoey Candito (sixth, 14:56), Elizabeth Sawicki (seventh, 15:09) and Ella Workman (ninth, 15:20) led the Amherst girls' team, followed by captain Addie Mager (10th, 15:43) and Aria Haupt (16th, 16:40).
On the boys' side, Amherst placed fifth in the league on Monday. The 'Canes were buoyed by Julian Camera (16th, 12:46), Ian Burns (19th, 13:09), Calvin Miller (20th, 13:14), and Peter Nedeau (26th, 14:24).
Otis Fairey was 28th in 14:45 and Emil Schein crossed in 29th (15:22) for Amherst.
The Hurricanes are scheduled to compete again on Saturday in Williamstown.
Monson 61, Hampshire 27 – Ali Jenkins and Addie Miklasiewicz each scored seven points for the Raiders in a Suburban League defeat on Tuesday.
Destiny Saltis tossed in five points for Hampshire.

Holyoke 49, West Springfield 37 — Senior Amilyan Treadwell-Mercedes poured in a game-high 18 points to lead the Purple Knights to a Valley League victory on Tuesday.
Jaylaness Santiago added 12 points of her own as the two senior leaders were the only two Holyoke players in double figures.
Kiara Perez (seven) and Evangeline Cauley (five) combined for 12 points in the win. Darby Poe scored a team-high 17 points for the Terriers in the loss.
Smith Academy 46, Hampshire 42 – Tied going into the fourth quarter, the Falcons outscored Hampshire by a 12-8 margin over the final eight minutes to secure a Hampshire League North win on Tuesday.
Greg Stone paced Smith Academy with 15 points, while Garret Willard followed with 11 points. Connor Kowalski (9 points) and Cam Graves (8) also aided the offensive effort.
Hampshire’s Braylon Jarrett dropped in 12 points for his side (three 3-pointers), and Vynce Carr added eight.
Girls basketball
Easthampton 54, Frontier 51 — Five 3-pointers and a game-high 23 points from Kayley Downie improved the Eagles to a perfect 7-0 record as they squeaked out a win over the previously undefeated Redhawks (8-1) in a Franklin County League North matchup Monday night. Christine Raymond (11) and Veronica Rapoza (9) combined for 20 points as well for Easthampton in the victory.
Frontier’s Skyler Steele poured in a team-high 18 points, Hailey Hutkoski added 14 points of her own, and Claire Kirkendall chipped in six.
Granby 59, Ludlow 33 — The Rams outscored the Lions 22-8 in the first quarter and never looked back in a FCL West win.
Granby’s Kalli White netted a game-high 23 points in an impressive performance, while Autumn Sicard drilled three 3s en route to a 13-point outing. Aubrey Parent added 13 of her own for the Rams.
Boys basketball
South Hadley 61, Baystate Academy 36 — Jack Loughrey continued his stretch of hot play on Monday night, leading the Tigers with 17 points as they reached at least 60 points as a team for the fourth time this year.
Isiah James tossed in 11 points, Brady Currier added 10, and Noah Hambley chipped in eight points for South Hadley as it improved to 5-2 on the season.
