High schools: Hopkins Academy’s Caprial DiBartolomeo takes first place in cross country meet

The microwave cooked the competition on Tuesday.

Hopkins Academy’s Caprial DiBartolomeo, nicknamed ‘Microwave,’ took first-place in the Gateway-Hopkins-Smith Vocational-Southwick quad meet, pacing the field with a time of 19 minutes, 16 seconds.

Gateway’s Anya Niles took second and Smith Voc’s Sicily Chase rounded out the podium in third. Both finished in 20:08.

Gateway’s Ava Christie took fourth (22:09), Lily Peloquin finished eighth (24:31), Laurel Demoss placed ninth (25:07) and Autumn Clark scored 10th (25:15).

The Gateway girls beat Hopkins and Smith Voc by identical 15-50 scores and topped Southwick, 24-31.

On the boys side, Gateway’s Jacob Maynard led all Hampshire County finishers with a fourth-place finish in 16:57. Fellow Gators Steven Savoy (14th, 20:12) and Jeff Antonellis (19th, 21:27) also finished in the top 20.

Smith Voc split their quad-meet, led by Theo Wojcik’s eighth-place finish at 18:03. Cole Mattison-Gulotta (11th, 18:36) and Riley Millay (18th, 20:54) followed behind.

Jack Cycz (sixth, 17:37) led Hopkins Academy, followed by Emerson Thorpe (15th, 20:17) and Deegan Austin-Dietz (16th, 20:19).

While Smith Voc lost to Southwick 48-15 and Gateway 28-27, the Vikings beat Hopkins 28-31 and Franklin Tech 15-50. Hopkins fell to Southwick 50-16 and Gateway 33-25. Gateway beat Southwick 50-17.

Boys cross country

Longmeadow 21, Amherst 36 – Though Calvin Miller took another first-place finish (16:18), a “state-caliber” Longmeadow team took the next six spots, ‘Canes head coach Chris Gould said.

Nico Lisle (sixth, 17:05), Sam Woodruff (eighth, 17:32) and Alden Pope (ninth, 17:35) rounded out the top 10. Amherst is now 3-1.

Hampshire 18, Greenfield 41; Hampshire 15, Westfield Tech 50 – The Raiders lead group took the top-four places on Tuesday – Oscar Schiff won (19:08), Nick Jones took second (19:08), Jack Laliberte took third (19:10) and Aiden Conklin took fourth (19:15). Sam Plumer (eighth, 20:20), Augustus Niswonger (ninth, 20:21) and Ben Zagac (10th, 21:07) rounded out the top 10.

Girls cross country

Amherst 24, Longmeadow 33 – Brooke Nedeau put up a 20:57 and Felix Goeckel ran a 21:03 in a ‘Canes win to split the meet.

Hampshire 15, Greenfield 50; Hampshire 15, Westfield Tech 50 – Raiders runners took the top seven spots on Tuesday in two resounding wins. Kathleen Barry (first, 22:54), Alice Hen richon (second, 22:54), Ada Corner (third, 23:16), Charlotte Niswonger  (fourth, 23:52), Keegan Butler (fifth, 23:54), Natalie Dunlap (sixth, 24:08) and Amelia Perry (seventh, 24:24) all outpaced their competition.

Northampton 21, Ludlow 36; Northampton 23, Westfield 37 – Though Westfield’s Megan Moran flew to another first-place finish (19:39), Blue Devils Mairead O’Neill (21:05) and Charlotte Simpach (21:45) placed second and third. Emmi Warren took sixth with a 24:05, Breanna Hensley took eighth with a 24:34 and Eliza LaCroix took 10th with a 25:26. Northampton is now 3-1 on the season.

Girls volleyball

PV Christian 3, Belchertown 2 – A day after coming back from two sets down to knock off Easthampton 3-2, Belchertown reached five sets again, but lost, 25-12, 23-25, 20-25, 27-25, 10-15. Layla Liminski and Melina David shared the team lead with 11 kills and Gianna Picardi added 10 more. Vivian Ross recorded 34 assists. 

Longmeadow 3, Frontier 0 – The Redhawks saw their three-game winning streak snapped to longtime rival Longmeadow, 25-16, 25-20, 25-14. Abigail Hernandez led Frontier with six kills while Olivia Machon followed with five, and Parrish Stilla made 16 assists. Arianna Miller led the team with 21 digs. Frontier travels next to Minnechaug on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Girls soccer

Westfield 0 Belchertown 0 – Jill Debarge made seven saves in a goalless home draw.

Hopkins 6, Taconic 0 – The Golden Hawks went up 4-0 inside 15 minutes and cruised to their fourth straight win to start the year. Sadie Cyr scored a goal and added an assist, Layni Bailey and Maggie Potter also scored, and Morgan Augustin, Olivia Earle and Helen Vissas recorded assists.

Smith Voc 6, Westfield Tech 0 – Caitlin Willard scored a hat-trick and added an assist, while Erin Miller scored a goal and added a hat-trick of assists. Monique Fredette and Kate Wolcott also scored. Julianis Suarez recorded an assist.

Easthampton 3, Ware 1 – Raegan Delisle tallied a goal and an assist and Arie Kuchyt and Samone Young also scored for the Eagles on Tuesday afternoon. Lia Bock added an assist and goalie Addie Barr made three saves.

Field hockey

East Longmeadow 5, Northampton 0 – The league-leading Spartans held serve at home, pulling out a 5-0 win over the Blue Devils on Tuesday night.

The loss halted a two-game winning streak for Northampton, which dropped to 3-2-1 overall. Next up is a Thursday home game against Westfield.

Golf

Frontier 157, Athol 188 — Ryan Cetto fired the low round of 37, helping the Redhawks improve to 6-3 on the season with their third straight win on Tuesday at Cherry Hill Golf Course in Amherst.

Cam Skiffington was next with a 39 to aid Frontier, while Jacob Cornelison (40), Porter Hall (41), Brady Wood (41) and Christian Powell (46) also broke 50.

Hampshire 158, Westfield Tech 173 — The Raiders had four of the five low scores on the day, paced by medalist Brayden Fennessy’s 36 at East Mountain Country Club in Westfield on Tuesday.

Riley Florek (40), Cam Jarosz (41) and Robert Herman (41) also figured into the scoring for Hampshire.

Hampshire 2, Agawam 2 — The Raiders trailed 1-0 at halftime on Monday night, but came back with a pair of goals in the second half to earn a draw against Agawam.

Owen Miller netted both goals for Hampshire.
