High schools: PVCICS boys tennis sweeps top-seeded Lee, punches Class C title-game ticket

It may have been an upset on paper, but if folks have been paying attention this spring, the Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School boys tennis team hasn’t played like an underdog.
The fourth-seeded Dragons were at it again on Tuesday, winning both doubles matches in third-set super-tiebreakers and sweeping the singles action en route to a 5-0 win over top-seeded Lee in a Western Mass. Class C semifinal contest in Lee.
With the win, PVCICS will play for the Class C title against No. 2 Lenox. Match details hadn’t been released at press time.
Hugo Shinn continued his dominant season atop the lineup for the Dragons (12-1), notching a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles.
At second singles, Aidan Cleary was also a straight-set winner with a 6-3, 6-2 victory, and Clayton English cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3.
At first doubles, James and Teddy Scott held on for a tight 5-7, 7-5, 10-6 victory, and the second doubles team of Derek and Devan Ye notched a 6-4, 4-6, 10-3 win.
Class B semis
No. 1 Northampton 5, No. 4 Ludlow 0 – The Blue Devils played like the top seed in the Class B tournament, cruising to the finals with a sweep over the Lions on Tuesday in a match played at Smith College.

Reilly Fowles picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win in No. 1 singles, Max Cahillane earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory in No. 2 singles while Durrell Patrick walked away with a 6-3, 6-0 win in No. 3 singles for Northampton.
Aidan Metz and Ethan Metz took No. 1 doubles 6-1, 6-0 while the Blue Devils won via forfeit in No. 2 doubles.
Class B quarters
No. 1 Hampshire 15, No. 8 Pope Francis 0 (5) – Joss Mettey tossed a five-inning perfect game, and the top-seeded Raiders easily punched their semifinal ticket on Tuesday in Westhampton.
Mettey struck out 10 in another dominant performance in the circle for Hampshire, which will host No. 4 Wahconah in the semifinals on Thursday at 5:15 p.m.
At the plate, Mettey slashed three hits and CC Thayer also roped three hits to go with two RBIs. Ashley Cortis, Hailey Wodecki, Reagan Dubay and Ryanne Dubay all finished with two hits in the win, as the hosts racked up 16 hits in the run-shortened contest.
No. 4 Wahconah 5, No. 5 South Hadley 2 – Isabella Schaeffer had two hits and drove in a run for the Tigers, which fell in the quarterfinal round on the road in Dalton on Tuesday.
Erin Bullough and Jae Velazquez also had a hit for South Hadley, and Jenna Bobrowski scored both of the team’s runs.
Class C quarters
No. 2 Taconic 6, No. 7 Frontier 4 – The seventh-seeded Redhawks scored three runs in the top of the first inning to set the tone, but host Taconic rallied to tie the game after two innings and eventually pushed a pair across in the fifth to advance to the Class C semifinals.
No. 2 Taconic will host No. 3 Mount Greylock on Friday.
Frontier’s Skyler Steele tripled and drove in a run during the three-run first inning, while Ashley Taylor notched two hits, including a double, and scored a run. Sophia Pinardi added a hit and an RBI for the Hawks, while Gabby Adams and Abigail Schreiber also had a hit for the visitors. Addy Wood drove in a run.
Taylor struck out one and walked two in a complete game effort in the circle, allowing six hits and three earned runs. Taconic pitcher Rylee Paronto recorded six strikeouts in seven innings to pick up the win.
Class A quarters
No. 2 Agawam 12, No. 7 Amherst 0 – Ariana Texidor-Melendez and Sofia Holden each had a hit for the Hurricanes in a quarterfinal loss on the road Tuesday.
In the circle, Holden struck out three and walked two in a complete-game effort.
Class D quarters
No. 5 Granby 4, No. 4 Mt. Everett 3 – Daniel Gauvin struck out 12 in 6 2/3 innings on the mound, and the Rams survived a late rally from the Eagles on Tuesday to punch a ticket to the Class D semifinals.
No. 5 Granby will travel to top-seeded Pioneer on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
Gauvin allowed just two hits and one run in his outing, as the Rams led 4-0 into the bottom of the seventh inning before Mt. Everett rallied with three runs in its final at bat in Sheffield. Andrew Feldman got the final out to secure the victory.
The Rams scored three runs in the top of the second and one in the third. Joshua Chateauneuf had two hits, including a triple, for the visitors and drove in a run. Nikolas Misiaszek also had a hit and an RBI.
NON-PLAYOFF GAMES
Girls lacrosse
South Hadley 11, Granby 8 – Raquel Losty and Jordyn Balint had two goals and an assist each and Eliana Britton notched three points (1G, 2A) in a win over Granby on Tuesday.
Goalie Evelyn Gingras made 12 saves in net for the win.
The Amherst boys varsity team took down Four Rivers, 15-6, on Senior Night.
Sam Kalman, Tyler Feeney, Taylor Hanson and Ben Haugsjaahabink each scored twice for Amherst. Hanson notched four assists as well, Tyler Feeney added three and Myles Powicki and Ian Buchanan each dished out a pair of helpers.
