CHESTERFIELD — Laura Somes reclaimed her seat for three more years on the Hampshire Regional School Committee in Monday’s election, receiving 103 votes to beat challenger Jesse McMillan, the former principal of New Hingham Regional Elementary School, who received 68 votes.
Somes, who could not be reached for comment after the election, is wrapping up her first term on the regional school committee. In a Gazette story last week, she touted a temporary ban on cellphones in the classroom as one of her key achievements, and noted that she would like that ban to become permanent.
“So far in pilot program feedback from administration, the majority of families and students say that the environment has been improved massively,” she said.
The mother of two juniors at Hampshire Regional High School, Somes views her job on the committee as representing the small student body of Chesterfield.
Somes moved to Chesterfield in 2018. She retired in 2006 after a career at the Department of Labor.
In other races, Kelli Wainscott won a vacant seat on the Chesterfield-Goshen School Committee, with 19 write-in votes. She has been serving on the committee since last year when she was appointed to fill a vacancy.
All incumbents were re-elected.
