Local baseball: Jake Smith homers, Belchertown Post 239 holds off Sheffield

Belchertown Post 239 built a 9-1 lead after two innings and held on, edging Sheffield Post 340 for an 11-9 win in an American Legion Senior Division baseball game Monday night at War Memorial Field in Sheffield.
Jake Smith belted a home run and drove in three runs for Belchertown, which improved to 7-1 with the victory.
Jake Waller was 3-for-4 with two RBIs to aid the offensive effort, while Ryan Gould doubled and drove in two runs for Post 239. Canyon Charron (hit, two RBIs) and Thatcher Rudnik (two runs) each added a double.
Alex West tossed three innings and earned the win, striking out two while allowing just two hits and one run.
Belchertown hosts Wilbraham on Wednesday night.
Amherst 11, Northampton 8 — Playing its third game in four days, the Amherst 14U baseball team clipped Northampton, 11-8, in a Pioneer Valley Youth Baseball League Sandy Koufax Division classic at Florence Field on Sunday.
Amherst led, 8-1, after four innings, but a big fifth inning with the bats from Northampton made it a one-run ballgame at 8-7. Despite the scare, Amherst held on during the latter innings to secure the victory.
Cyrus Arwade starred on the mound for Amherst, tallying eight strikeouts and one walk in four innings while allowing just one run.

Daniel Lebron, Brady Klaes (5 total bases), Nolan Ingram (two singles and a triple) and Tristan Feeley each cracked a couple of hits for Amherst, which improved to 4-1 on the season.
Bradyn Rios went 4-for-4 to pace Northampton from the plate, while pitchers Maceo Nteta and Oliver Yau limited the damage following Amherst’s early onslaught.
Amherst returns to the diamond on Wednesday when it hosts Hatfield at Amherst Middle School. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
Amherst 11, Dalton 11 — It was a run parade during Friday night’s battle in Dalton.
Amherst held multiple leads throughout the contest, including an early 3-0 advantage, but neither team was able to pull away before the game was called off due to darkness.
Garrett Peltier, Sean Lucien (two-RBI double) and Agho Mankin swung the bats well for Amherst while starting pitcher Gus Garrett Peltier surrendered just two runs in two innings of work.
Dalton went ahead, 9-8, during the fifth inning, then Amherst evened the score the next frame, before the score ping-ponged each inning thereafter until sundown.
West County 5, Amherst 2 — Daniel Lebron’s hot bat wasn’t enough as Amherst suffered its first loss of the season on Thursday at Amherst Middle School.
Lebron went 3-for-4 from the plate, but the rest of the Amherst (3-1) lineup struggled to solve West County pitcher Caleb Kimberly. Kimberly threw four scoreless innings before Amherst broke through during the fifth with both of its runs.
Brady Klaes and Drew Holland combined to toss a respectable game for Amherst as the duo allowed just two runs in five innings.
