It was quite a Mount Washington debut for Plainfield’s Meghan Davis.
The 22-year-old Mohawk Trail Regional alum and recent Tufts University graduate competed in the 62nd Delta Dental Mt. Washington Road Race on Saturday in Pinkham Notch, N.H., and made quite a splash in her first-ever appearance at the grueling event.
Davis finished in third place on the women’s side with a time of 1 hour, 17 minutes and 46 seconds in the grueling 7.6-mile course that moves up the auto road.
With the forecast calling for torrential rain and thunderstorms, the weather cooperated just enough to get the event in. After a weather-shortened race in 2022, this year’s field was treated to surprisingly decent conditions at the base with slight drizzle and fog above the tree line and relatively calm winds which provided decent running conditions.
But the weather took a turn for the worse about an hour into the race, and conditions devolved into a steady, almost horizontal, cold, windswept rain with visibilities of about 10 to 20 feet at the summit.
Colorado Springs, Colo.’s Joseph Gray won the overall title for a record-tying seventh time, finishing in 1:00:24. Sam Chelanga, also of Colorado Springs, Colo., was second while Tyler Andrews of Concord, Mass. was third.
On the women’s side, Amber Ferreira of Concord, N.H., won for the first time in a time of 1:15:16. Second-place finisher Marybeth Chelanga of Colorado Springs, Colo. crossed in 1:16:03, while Davis was close behind in third (28th overall).
Belchertown’s Dan Grip took 13th overall in the event, posting a time of 1:11:37, while Pelham’s Wouter Hoogkamer nabbed 21st place (1:15:02).
