MIAA tourneys: Skyler Steele homers but Frontier softball falls to Mt. Greylock, 8-4

A fast start from second-seeded Mount Greylock propelled the Mounties into the MIAA Div. 5 Softball Tournament quarterfinals.

Host Mount Greylock scored twice in the first inning and two more times in the second en route to an 8-4 win over No. 15 Frontier in the Round of 16 on Tuesday in Williamstown.

Emma Newberry homered in the first inning to get the Mounties off and running. Trailing 4-0 in the third, Frontier rallied with a pair of runs on a two-run home run from Skyler Steele.

The lead grew to 8-2 into the fifth, and while the Redhawks chipped away with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, Greylock pitcher Kami Sweet sealed the deal with nine strikeouts over seven innings.

Frontier pitcher Ashley Taylor allowing eight hits and eight runs while striking out two. In addition to Steele’s homer, Jazzy Hayes, Gabrielle Adams and Delaney Fifield (RBI) also had a hit apiece for the Redhawks.

Boys volleyball

Div. 2 Round of 16

No. 5 West Springfield 3, No. 12 Frontier 0 – The fifth-seeded Terriers had too much firepower for No. 12 Frontier, as the hosts advanced to the Division 2 quarterfinals with a 25-16, 25-16, 25-18 sweep in the Round of 16 on Tuesday night in West Side.

“Tough night but very proud of the players for their commitment and efforts this season,” Frontier co-coach Sean MacDonald said. “Credit to West Springfield, they played very well and clean, with minimal errors. We’re certainly not happy with the result tonight but feel like we’re moving in the right direction as a program.”

Frontier (19-3) received a team-high seven kills from Jesse Kurkulonis, while Aleks Carey followed with six kills on the night. Setter Tavo Vincent-Warner dished out 15 assists, while the back row defense was propelled by Ngawang Deter with nine digs. Kurkulonis and Jack Carey added six digs apiece for the Western Mass. Class C champion Redhawks.

West Springfield advanced to the quarterfinals and a matchup with either No. 4 Milford or No. 13 Wayland.

Boys tennis

Div. 4 Round of 16

No. 4 Hamilton-Wenham 5, No. 20 PVCICS 0 – The Western Mass. Class C champion Dragons saw their season come to an end on Tuesday in the Round of 16.

James and Teddy Scott dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision at first doubles, while Hugo Shinn fell at No. 1 singles for PVCICS, 6-0, 6-4.

Girls tennis

Div. 3 Round of 16

No. 13 North Reading 3, No. 4 Belchertown 2 – Three matches went to three sets, but the visiting Hornets won two of them en route to the Round of 16 victory on Tuesday at Ludlow Tennis Club.

North Reading advanced to play No. 5 Wayland in the Div. 3 quarterfinals.

Belchertown (16-4) earned a victory at No. 3 singles from Anna Stamp, who was a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 winner. The Orioles’ second doubles team of Emalee Chaisson and Mia Corish also snagged a 6-4, 6-4 victory for the team’s second point.

North Reading won three-set matches at first singles and first doubles to grab the road win. Althea Bradley was a 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 1 over Belchertown’s Ava Shea, while North Reading’s No. 1 doubles tandem of Chloe Florez and Katherine Hundley notched a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over Belchertown’s Kasey Gibbons and Amanda Murray.

Girls lacrosse

Div. 4 Round of 32

No. 4 Nantucket 18, No. 29 South Hadley 2 – The Tigers took the long bus and ferry ride to Nantucket, falling in the Round of 32 on Tuesday.

South Hadley finished its season 12-6, while the Whalers advanced to the Round of 16 and a matchup with No. 20 Watertown on Thursday.
