Behind a standout pitching performance and some stellar defense, the Belchertown baseball team’s Cinderella run through the MIAA Division 3 tournament continued on Monday.

The 37th-seeded Orioles, which already won on the road over Foxborough in the preliminary round, took down fifth-seeded Blackstone Valley Tech, 2-1, in a nail-biter of a Round of 32 game on Monday in Upton.

Belchertown (12-8) advanced to play at No. 12 Sandwich in the Round of 16 later this week.

Jake Waller went all seven innings on the mound for the Orioles. He struck out two and walked two, scattering four hits to go with just one run allowed in the bottom of the second inning. Behind him, Belchertown made just one error.

Waller had a hit and drove in a run for the Os, which scored twice in the top of the third to snatch control and hold on. Josh Misiaszek also doubled in a run in the inning, while Derek Gould and Ian McDonald added hits and both reached base twice.

Div. 4 Round of 32

No. 1 Lynnfield 10, No. 33 South Hadley 0 — The Tigers were limited to just two hits — singles by Matt Drobiak and Burke Belsky — as top-seeded Lynnfield punched a Round of 16 ticket on Monday.

South Hadley, which finished its season 16-6 overall, trailed just 2-0 into the bottom of the fifth inning before the hosts scored four runs in the inning and tacked on four more in the sixth to put things out of reach. Logan Carpenter walked twice at the plate for the Tigers.

Lynnfield (19-2) will host No. 17 Oxford in the Round of 16.

Boys tennis

Div. 4 Round of 16

No. 2 PVCICS 4, No. 18 Nantucket 1 — Make it 18-0 on the season for the Dragons, as well as their deepest run ever in a state tournament after falling in the Round of 16 the previous two seasons.

PVCICS cruised past the Whalers thanks to two singles wins and a double sweep on Monday at Hampshire College.

Aidan Cleary was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 1 singles for the Dragons, and Lee Ferguson continued his dominant season with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2.

At first doubles, James and Teddy Scott won a tough back-and-forth match against Hawkin Edwardes and Sam Iller, 6-3,7-5, and the second doubles pairing of Derek and Devan Ye won 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (10-8).

PVCICS will host the winner of Tuesday’s Round of 16 match between Fairhaven and Lee in the state quarterfinals, later this week at Hampshire College.

Softball

Div. 5 Round of 32

No. 4 Georgetown 8, No. 29 Gateway 6 – The visiting Gators gave a top four seed everything it could handle in Georgetown on Monday.

Gateway ultimately saw its season come to an end with an 8-6 loss in the Round of 32.

Gateway jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and held a 4-1 advantage after two. Defensive plays paced the visitors in the first two innings as catcher Amy Fisk threw out a runner trying to advance to third on a base hit in the first inning, while Alexi Bonenfant ended the second inning snaring a line drive and doubling the runner off second base to kill a rally.

Gateway pitcher Angela Maygar kept her team in the game, and despite trailing late, the Gators rallied with two runs scoring with two outs in the seventh to get within range. Bonenfant, Magyar, Sawyer Wilkinson, Willow Hicks and Kaitlyn Maynard all had base hits.

Bonenfant, Magyar, Wilkinson, Maynard, Reeghan Morawiec, Anna Sakaske and Maia Kibbe took part in the last high school game of their careers.

The Gators finished their season 7-11 overall, and won a state tournament game when it beat English High over the weekend,

Georgetown (12-6) will host No. 20 Wareham in the Round of 16 on Wednesday.

Boys lacrosse

Div. 4 Round of 32

No. 2 Norwell 18, No. 31 Belchertown 3 – One game removed from a wild double overtime preliminary victory over Minuteman Regional, the Orioles bowed out of the Div. 4 tourney with a loss to powerhouse Norwell on the road Monday.

Nolan Petrucelli scored five goals to pace the Clippers (13-6), which will host No. 15 Fairhaven in the Round of 16 on Wednesday.

Belchertown finished its season 11-9 overall.

Girls lacrosse

Div. 4 Round of 32

No. 2 Nantucket 16, No. 34 Hampshire 0 – The Raiders saw their season come to an end with a trip to Nantucket on Monday.

The high-powered Whalers built a 10-0 lead after one quarter and led 14-0 at halftime.

Hampshire finished its season 13-7 overall, while Nantucket advanced for a game with No. 15 Fairhaven in the Round of 16.
