HADLEY — Banners recognizing the town’s past and present military veterans, as well as those continuing to actively serve in the armed forces, lined Hadley streets for the first time in 2024.

Now, the 83 banners that were part of the inaugural program will be joined by an additional 59 banners this spring, with the Town Banner Committee holding a preview kick-off event Sunday at the Young Men’s Club, 138 East St.

“I’m very proud that we’ve got more to display,” said Joyce Chunglo, a former Select Board member who serves on the committee.

The banners will be on view during the event, which is catered by the North Hadley Sugar Shack. From noon to 1 p.m. will be the private preview for sponsors and families, with lunch served, and then from 1 to 2 p.m. will be the public preview and veteran presentation.

In the days following the event,  firefighters and other town employees will be hanging the banners along Route 9, West Street, Middle Street, East Street and River Drive.

Because of the substantial increase in the number of banners, Chunglo said it’s possible some poles will have two banners, but there is also the possibility of extending the display, such as bringing the banners north on River Drive to the North Hadley fire substation.
