AMHERST — A proposed demolition of a two-story commercial building in downtown Amherst, to allow for development of a new mixed-use project, will be considered by the Historical Commission on Monday.
Like it did four years ago, when developer Barry Roberts first proposed razing the 37 North Pleasant St. building that houses McMurphy’s Uptown Tavern and Amherst Typewriter & Computer, the commission will consider the removal of the circa 1900 building under the demolition delay bylaw. The virtual hearing begins at 7 p.m.
The posting for the hearing states that the demolition would “make room for a new two-story mixed use building.”
The commission at its hearing in March 2021 determined the building was not historically significant and thus no delay was necessary.
The 125-year-old building proposed for demolition is located between the Amherst Oyster Bar and is separated from Antonio’s Pizza by a narrow alleyway that allows pedestrians to access businesses on Boltwood Walk and the Boltwood parking garage.
When last proposed to tear down the building, Roberts was contemplating replacing it with a five-story building. That demolition application, though, also included removing a newer building at 45 Boltwood Walk, constructed by the Knights of Columbus.
That building, Quigley Hall, for the next two years will become the home of the Amherst History Center, where the Amherst Historical Society will be operating from while the Jones Library expansion and renovation takes place.
Roberts bought the entire property for $1.29 million in 2018 from the Amherst Knights of Columbus Home Association.

Roberts is currently developing a five-story, mixed-use building at 45-55 South Pleasant St., which is expected to be complete by fall and leased to Amherst College to house 63 students.
