CHICOPEE — A South Hadley man is being charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol following a two-car crash on Memorial Drive that killed the driver of the other vehicle on the evening of July 25, according to Chicopee Police.

Andrew Wilkins, 37, was arrested at the time of the crash on the drunken driving charge, with additional or amended charges possible. The incident continues to be investigated by Chicopee Police and the Hampden County district attorney’s office.

The crash occurred as an officer was working a detail on the road. That officer observed Wilkins attempting to flee following the crash and stopped the vehicle, while other responding officers, along with firefighters and paramedics, extricated the other driver and treated that person and a passenger.

Both were brought by ambulance to an area hospital, where the driver later died.
