UMass commencement to bring traffic delays, road closures in Amherst

AMHERST — Heavy traffic, possible delays and road closures will be taking place around the University of Massachusetts campus, both in Amherst and Hadley, starting Wednesday, as students move out and then the undergraduate commencement is held late Friday afternoon.
Fearing Street will be closed to vehicles traveling west both Wednesday and Thursday, with other traffic patterns, including one-way designations for streets and loading zones set up, at both the Southwest and Commonwealth Honors College residential communities.
The UMass campus will be closed for general business on Friday in advance of the 155th Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony at McGuirk Alumni Stadium at 5 p.m.
For the commencement, vehicles coming from south of campus via Route 9 should use the Route 116 north exit to the campus, while vehicles coming from north of campus, including Sunderland, should get off Route 116 at Meadow Street and follow directions to the campus via North Pleasant Street.
During commencement and senior ceremony festivities over the weekend, there will be several road closures, including University Drive being closed between Massachusetts Avenue and Amity Street Friday from 1:30 to 9 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Governors Drive westbound will be closed Friday from 7 to 9 p.m., Saturday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. Fearing Street west of Sunset Avenue will be closed Friday starting at 1:30 p.m., and all-day Saturday and Sunday.
In Hadley, Rocky Hill Road east of North Maple Street will be closed Friday from 1:30 to 9 p.m. and Plainville Road will be closed to traffic at North Maple Street Friday from 1:30 to 9 p.m. North Hadley Road eastbound at North Maple Street and Roosevelt Street will be closed Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
North Pleasant Street, between Eastman Lane and Massachusetts Avenue, will be closed Friday beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Other closures include Commonwealth Avenue from Massachusetts Avenue to Holdsworth Way Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Route 116 southbound at Meadow Street Friday from 1:30 to 6 p.m. The off ramps to the UMass campus from Route 116 will be closed in both directions Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Schools and colleges will also hold their individual senior recognition ceremonies across campus throughout the weekend.
