AMHERST — It looks like Frank Martin is going to have quite the roster overhaul, as two more UMass men’s basketball players entered the transfer portal on Tuesday. Akil Watson and Marqui Worthy both decided to depart from Amherst, making it six total players from last year’s team now in the portal.

Watson and Worthy join Jaylen Curry, Lewis Walker, Amadou Doumbia and Shahid Muhammad in the portal.

Martin spoke highly of Worthy, a 6-foot-3 guard, several times this past season, complimenting the sophomore’s toughness and resilience. Worthy, a native of Anaheim, Calif., decided to stay at UMass after rarely seeing playing time as a freshman. He developed a nice role with the Minutemen this winter, appearing in all but one game. He came up huge in UMass’ massive upset win over Dayton, scoring a career-high 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting. Worthy averaged 5.8 points, 1.9 assists and 1.5 rebounds per game on 18.2 minutes.

As for Watson, the sophomore forward appeared in 23 games and averaged only 10 minutes in those contests. He never really carved out a spot in the rotation as he sat behind frontcourt players like Daniel Hankins-Sanford, Malek Abdelgowad and Muhammad. Watson, who stands at 6-foot-9, averaged 3.6 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. His best outing came in the triple overtime thriller at Fordham, where he was forced into the lineup due to several UMass players fouling out. Watson scored nine points on a season-high 29 minutes.

Aside from Curry, the Minutemen haven’t lost anyone from their regular starting lineup, and haven’t lost a player averaging more than Worthy’s 5.8 points per game. Yes, Martin has work to do to bring in players to fill his roster, but the guys he has lost so far certainly aren’t irreplaceable. And based on last season’s 12-20 record and 11th-place finish in the Atlantic 10, it may not be the worst thing to bring in fresh faces as the Minutemen head to the MAC next winter.
