The UMass men’s basketball team will play Providence in 2024, after all.

The Minutemen and the Friars on Monday announced a charity exhibition game between the two New England foes on Oct. 26 at 4 p.m. at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, R.I.

UMass was initially scheduled to face Providence in the semifinals of the 2024 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase on Nov. 23 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., before Providence backed out to join the Battle 4 Atlantis, an eight-team event held in the Bahamas that has attracted many of the sport’s best teams in recent years.

The Hall of Fame’s Thanksgiving weekend tournament is now called the 2024 Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off, and UMass will play Temple on Nov. 23 and Florida State on Nov. 24.

Though not an official game, the programs have met 34 times before, most recently on Dec. 7, 2018, when UMass came back from down 20 points to beat Ed Cooley’s squad 79-78 on the road.

Providence enters its second season under head coach Kim English following an NIT berth last season.

All net proceeds from the game will help support the Rhode Island Free Clinic and Baystate Children's Hospital. Tickets are $25.

UMass has one remaining exhibition game it can fill. The Minutemen open their season on Nov. 4 at home against New Hampshire.
