BELCHERTOWN — Window World of Western Massachusetts has a long history of providing quality windows and doors, but the business only provides one piece in the whole picture of home improvement — until now.

Over the past year, the team at Window World of Western Massachusetts launched a new venture called Go Green Home Performance to offer coverage of the whole house, and specifically the insulation that lies behind the walls.

“It’s us trying to close that circle, to not just help them with windows and doors, but also look at the house,” said Tim Drost, owner of Window World of Western Massachusetts. “How the house breathes, how we can contain heat or cooling. We wanted to be a complete service for our customers.”

Go Green uses the latest developments in building performance to prescribe either foam, fiberglass or mineral wool insulation. Lead by Drost’s lifetime of experience in the home improvement industry, the company guarantees the same level of customer service and thorough installation that Window World of Western Massachusetts has built its reputation on, only with these new services to create a one-stop shop for sustainable home insulation.

“We can have great, educated conversations at their kitchen table about how to help them with their energy cost savings needs,” Drost said. “There are separate installation companies and separate window companies, and everybody’s talking a different language. But if they call us, we can talk about both those things, and help them make an educated decision, because we can do it all.”

Most of New England’s housing stock is over 100 years old, when building envelopes allowed heat to escape easily. A house with poor insulation requires more energy to heat to a comfortable temperature, causing the release of more greenhouse gases as it inflates energy costs.

Besides the commonwealth’s MassSave program, which incentivizes updating home insulation through the income assistance, federal tax credits and rebates, Drost said there’s a big gap in the marketplace to meet both state climate change goals and resident’s thermal comfort needs.

Homeowners who experience thermal discomfort or want to boost the energy efficiency of their house can receive a free estimate from Go Green Performance home specialists, who will conduct an inspection of the basement, attic, garage, porch or crawl space.

Employee Brian Jarry said the installation team learns about the latest in building science — an interdisciplinary field about the functionality of a building based on physical phenomena — to properly diagnose the insulation issues and suggest which of the four products would improve the home’s energy efficiency and comfort.

“Customers are extremely pleased with not only the products but the people who are installing it,” Jarry said. “We have great attention to detail, communicate on-site very well about what to expect, and we leave the space cleaner than when we get there.”

All the insulation materials are made with recycled, natural or eco-friendly materials, according to Go Green Performance’s website. Jarry said mineral wool and fiberglass, either in bats or blown in, allows more heat to escape than foam board or spray foam, but will also cost less. Spray foam is the highest quality insulation because it’s manufactured on site and creates a continuous air barrier from floor to ceiling. However, all the products, Jarry said, have their specific uses.

“Spray foam insulation is best in crawl space because not only does it provide that continuous seal, but it’s a vapor retardant so water vapor can’t move in easily,” Jarry said. “But in an attic, you can achieve the same results with loose fiberglass or cellulose as you can with spray foam, but you’d need to use more product to achieve it. But sometimes that’s the most cost effective option.”

Drost said that most insulation companies only supply one of the four materials, so several companies may work on one room to get the desired effect. Go Green Performance keeps all the products, and installation, under one roof to streamline the home improvement process.

“The pride of our family is we’re in the installation business,” Drost said. “We’ve lived in that space for multiple generations. I think it’s huge for our customers that they can be assured that not only are they getting great products, but it’s getting installed right, because it doesn’t work if it’s not installed right, and especially with insulation.”

As with Window World of Western Massachusetts, Go Green Performance is a local and family-owned company. Drost’s children, nieces and nephews all work in the business, bringing the family dynamic to their company.

“It’s not a 9-to-5 for us. It’s seven days a week. It’s talking about it on Sunday dinners,” Drost said. “That’s a way of life for us.”
