Little Bruce (left) appears to have the beginnings of some nice long crest feathers. Big Bruce (right) has a stunted crest, a black patch behind his eye and some new tail feathers growing in. Both birds might qualify as a "hot mess."

This photo of a short-tailed shrew shows it all. Note the short tail (for which the species is named), the short, velvety fur, the small ears and the tiny eyes that all prove useful for an animal that spends much of its time underground.

The mantis (on the left) is standing its ground against this male northern cardinal. The insect has its arms and wings raised in an attempt to look big and scary, but 0.2 seconds later the cardinal delivered a bite that spelled the beginning of the end for the mantis.

This juvenile yellow-bellied flycatcher was identified by its bold eye ring, the bold yellowish bars on its wings and its general yellow appearance. Other flycatchers may have yellow accents, but not over the entire body.
