Harlan Sturm of Belchertown passes by a pair of fruit trees framing a view to the former town of Prescott at the Quabbin Reservoir in Belchertown on Monday. Sturm usually takes a 4-mile walk near the site’s visitors center but cut that short when he realized he wasn’t dressed for the unexpectedly brisk weather with a stiff wind and temperatures in the 20s. Prescott and three other towns were taken and flooded in the 1930s to create the reservoir for Boston’s drinking water.

The artist, from Boston, took input from the student body of 340 children and incorporated their animal ideas, including a rainbow-tailed squirrel and a “dog-dragon,” into the final design. The one-week artist residency was funded through a grant from the Michael E. Smith Endowment for Excellence in Education.

About 50 people took part in the annual commemoration of Dominic Daley and James Halligan, two Irish immigrants who were wrongly convicted of an 1805 murder and hanged in Northampton on June 5, 1806.
