Under a punishing sun on Tuesday afternoon, the Amherst Hurricanes bested Greenfield 7-1 in a Pioneer Valley Youth Baseball League Sandy Koufax matchup. Game time temperatures sat at 100 degrees, but it didn’t seem to slow down Amherst one bit.
Oscar Reich pitched a gem for the Hurricanes, striking out 10 Greenfield batters and walking only two in a six-inning effort. Reich allowed one run over those frames. Cyrus Arwade, Read Guidera and Gus Garrett Peltier were tasked with catching duties in the brutal heat, and the three of them did a fantastic job behind the plate. Oliver Howard closed the seventh inning in scoreless fashion in relief.
Amherst opened the scoring slowly, scoring one run each in the first and second innings. In the first, Howard drove in Brady Klaes, and in the second, Garrett Peltier came scored on a single after doubling and stealing third. The ‘Canes cracked the game open with four runs in the third off hits from Daniel Lebron, Howard, Arwade, Garrett Peltier and Drew Holland. Howard scored the seventh and final run for the ‘Canes in the fifth as Amherst cruised to the victory.
Northampton 13, Dalton 5 — Jackson Galenski collected three hits in three at bats as the Blue Devils defeated Dalton on Monday at Wahconah Regional High School in a PVYBL Sandy Koufax contest. Galenski singled in the first inning, tripled in the fifth inning and tripled in the seventh inning to cap off his day.
Northampton scored seven runs in the fourth inning on the way to victory. Maceo Nteta drew a walk, scoring one run, Jack White hit an RBI single, Dylan Lawrence-Riddell drove in two with a single and Maceo Nteta (walk), Miller Cobrich (walk), Campbell Keenan (hit by pitch) and Adrien Melly-Wright (walk) all drove in runs. The Blue Devils amassed 10 hits in the game, with Austin Sojkowski and Miles Cameron each collecting two.
Oliver Yau earned the win on the mound. The lefty surrendered one hit and two runs (none earned) over five innings, striking out three and walking three. Melly-Wright appeared in relief.
Northampton 14, Frontier 7 — On Tuesday, the Northampton Koufax team won over Frontier at Florence Athletic Fields.
Frontier got on the board in the top of the first inning after Northampton committed an error, and Drew Crutch singled to right field, scoring one run. But the Blue Devils flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the first, scoring seven runs on three hits to take the lead, 7-2. Northampton then added five runs on two hits in the bottom of the second inning. An error scored two runs, Jack White doubled, scoring two runs, and a wild pitch scored one run.
