■Sgt. Robert Allen has been named permanent police chief in Easthampton after serving as acting chief for two years. Allen was appointed to the post over Sgt. Daniel Gallagher, the only other man eligible for the post, in a 2-to-1 vote which was later made unanimous.
■Smith College yesterday took out a building permit for construction of a $100,000 dining hall between 41 and 45 Elm St. The dining hall, to be located at the rear of the Mary Ellen Chase and Duckett Houses on Elm Street, will contain a large room for general dining purposes and a smaller room for student organization dining.
■Attorney Thomas A. Miranda will continue serving as the chair of the city’s License Commission, now that the City Council confirmed his appointment. Mayor Mary L. Ford re-appointed Miranda to a six-year term as chair of the commission, which oversees establishments serving liquor, beer and wine in the city.
■The Mountain Farms Mall, labeled “the Dead Mall” because of its retail history, has been sold to the developers of a Wal-Mart planned for the Route 9 address. The $7.6 million sale was recorded Wednesday at the Hampshire County Registry of Deeds.
■A former state senator from western Massachusetts, a former Hampden Superior Court clerk, the CEO of a social services network and a Northampton retailer are among the scores of applicants seeking to open medical marijuana dispensaries in Massachusetts. Five of the 181 applications the state Department of Public Health received by Thursday’s deadline are for prospective dispensaries in Hampshire County.
■Next month, a photograph of Aidan O’Donoghue, who last year launched a successful run for co-vice president of his sophomore class at Northampton High School, will be splashed across a giant screen in the heart of New York’s Times Square. His photo was one of a few hundred chosen from among more than 1,000 entries in the National Down Syndrome Society’s annual video event.
