AMHERST — Whenever an emergency call is placed, the person facing a crisis places their confidence in that whoever arrives will be a trained professional — capable, skilled and courageous. The image of a firefighter — tough, strong, and always willing to put themselves on the line — is a common ideal in the public’s consciousness. In Amherst, these firefighters may even be local full-time college students.

The Northampton Historical Commission wants to avoid generating a “Disneyland” type of atmosphere of false nostalgia in its proposal to create a national historic district in the downtown area, commission chair C. Keith Wilbur said yesterday. The commission is seeking to place a portion of the downtown area on the federal National Register of Historic Places.

Mary McColgan, wife of former Rep. Edward McColgan, was elected yesterday to the Ward 4 City Council seat that her husband once held. Mrs. McColgan, a Democrat who ran without opposition in yesterday’s special election, will take the council seat vacated by Rep. William P Nagle Jr., when he resigned to join the Legislature in January.

Eleven persons were baptized at a ceremony held by the Assembly of God Church Saturday in the YMCA pool on Prospect St. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. Ronald S. Hale, who, while half-submerged in the pool, read the Bible’s account of Jesus’ baptism.

A special committee report which would change personnel policies at the University of Massachusetts has been greeted with shock by many professors, who see the report as seriously eroding their authority. The report indicates that the UMass president or trustees can eliminate a program or a department and can fire faculty, whether or not faculty members are tenured.

The eight-day festival continues today with a day-long George Washington’s Birthday sale in the Downtown Business area and a sports luncheon at the Hotel Northampton featuring the area’s two college men’s basketball teams, the University of Massachusetts and Amherst College.

Northampton police are investigating a break and theft at the Pro Brush Division of Vistron Corp. in Florence early Monday morning. A little more than $2,000 was taken, Charles A. Gaudry, Pro Brush personnel manager, said. The money was taken from a filing cabinet in the plant’s main office.

The events revolve around the annual observance of Rally Day, an all-college celebration which began in February 1876, when the class of 1879 held a reception in honor of Washington’s Birthday.

Members of the Easthampton Consumer Action Committee (ECAC) will issue a letter of invitation to President Ford to visit this area to explain his recent energy proposals. The local group received nationwide television coverage Friday after a Thursday evening meeting with utility company representatives and elected officials drew a crowd of over 600 people to Park School Auditorium.

The facade of the Hampshire County Courthouse has begun to crumble. Some eight chunks of stone varying in size, a few as large as six inches square and one at least one and a half feet long, have fallen this week from the front of the courthouse. The stones are falling from above an archway on the eastern end of the front porch facing Main Street.
