NORTHAMPTON — After walking through the ground-level door of Ainsworth Gymnasium, up a flight of stairs and through the first-floor doors, you’re immediately met with five trophies staring right back at you. The two on the end are NEWMAC championship trophies. The three in the middle? A pair of Division 3 Women’s Basketball Final Four trophies and a national-runner up one.

NORTHAMPTON — Each member of the Smith College women’s basketball team climbed up the ladder to cut down a piece of the net on the home side of Ainsworth Gymnasium following the No. 1 Pioneers’ 79-66 victory over No. 6 MIT in the NEWMAC championship game on Sunday afternoon.

AMHERST — Getting consecutive stops on the defensive end felt almost impossible for the UMass men’s basketball team through 30 minutes of action. Rhode Island used a 3-point barrage and timely Sebastian Thomas drives to the hoop to build a 77-67 lead with 10 minutes, 53 seconds remaining in the second half.

NORTHAMPTON — The Smith College basketball team has its eyes set on a fifth consecutive NEWMAC tournament championship, and the Pioneers started their quest off on the right foot on Wednesday night at Ainsworth Gymnasium. Smith, the top seed in the NEWMAC following an unblemished 11-0 conference record, used 21 points and 11 rebounds from Ella Sylvester to get past a pesky No. 8 Coast Guard team, 70-62, in the quarterfinals.

AMHERST — UMass men’s basketball head coach Frank Martin confirmed Thursday that senior forward Daniel Rivera would miss the remainder of the regular season with a knee injury. The third-year Minutemen head coach didn’t offer a timetable for Rivera’s return, but did say that he had been playing through an injury for about a month.

AMHERST — Emotions continued to run high well past the 40 minutes of action between the UMass women’s basketball team and Rhode Island. The two rivals had not only just played their last-ever Atlantic 10 matchup, but it was also the Minutewomen’s senior night – where they recognized Stefanie Kulesza and Mikenzie Jones. Head coach Mike Leflar and Kulesza both shed tears in the post game press conference following UMass’ 42-40 loss to the Rams on Sunday afternoon at the Mullins Center.

It feels like an eternity ago that the UMass men’s basketball team was in the mix for a second consecutive double bye in the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament. Back on Feb. 4, the Minutemen gave away a late lead to Saint Louis with third place in the conference on the line. They beat La Salle the very next game, but have since dropped four in a row – losing by an average margin of 18.5 points.
It was a dominant outing for the UMass women’s basketball team Wednesday.

AMHERST — Two themes continued to come up during UMass hockey head coach Greg Carvel’s postgame press conference following the Minutemen’s 4-1 loss to Boston College on Saturday night at Mullins Center: desperation and fatigue.

AMHERST — According to UMass men’s basketball coach Frank Martin, not one player in his usual starting five – Jaylen Curry, Rahsool Diggins, Jayden Ndjigue, Daniel Rivera and Daniel Hankins-Sanford – suited up for practice on Friday, just 24 hours before the Minutemen were set to host St. Bonaventure at the Mullins Center.

AMHERST — A stretch of supremacy any longer than a handful of years, in any sport, is unheard of at the NCAA Division I level. It’s hard to win titles each season when a target is planted squarely on your back.

AMHERST — Through about 13 minutes of action, it looked as if the UMass men’s basketball team was going to do something very few teams have done all season: shut down Davidson forward Reed Bailey, who leads the Atlantic 10 in points per game (20.0) this year.

SOUTH HADLEY — Wide eyes, wide smiles and the sound of large groups of children running around filled the Kendall Sports and Dance Complex on the campus of Mount Holyoke College Saturday afternoon.

AMHERST — Allie Palmieri stepped into a 3-pointer and drilled it with 3 minutes, 37 seconds to go in the fourth quarter of the UMass women’s basketball team’s game against Davidson on Saturday afternoon – cutting the Minutewomen’s deficit to 10 points (48-38). They hadn’t played well offensively all game, but their defense continued to turn the Wildcats over and give their offense a chance to get back in it.

AMHERST — I received a pair of texts about five minutes apart a half hour after the UMass men’s basketball team practically gave Saint Louis a crucial Atlantic 10 win on Tuesday night in the Mullins Center.

AMHERST — The rules were rather simple to Noah Lee, who stepped onto Jack Leaman Court inside the Mullins Center at halftime of Wednesday night’s women’s basketball game between the host Minutewomen and St. Bonaventure. Make four baskets – a layup, free throw, 3-pointer and half-court shot – and he’d be $10,000 richer.

AMHERST — It’s become almost normal at this point. In recent memory, any time the UMass men’s basketball team starts to play well and garners attention from the fan base, it seemingly finds a way to let them down. Such was the case on Tuesday night in front of a season-high 3,745 fans at Mullins Center as the Minutemen fell 73-71 to Saint Louis with third place in the Atlantic 10 on the line.

While there are still a handful of fans who haven’t fully bought into the current landscape of college athletics, there’s no question the world of Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) deals and the transfer portal certainly has its benefits.
