The Amherst Regional High School girls varsity ultimate team traveled to Allentown, Pa. over the weekend to compete in its first-ever High School National Invitational tournament, earning the No. 10 seed in a field of 16 teams from all over the country – from California to Massachusetts and everywhere in between.

As has been the case in each of the big tournaments – the Amherst Invitational, Pioneer Valley Invitational and now the Division 1 state championship – this season, the Amherst Regional girls varsity ultimate team met Four Rivers in the finals on Sunday. And just as the previous two times played out, the Hurricanes prevailed to earn first place and bring home a trophy.

NORTHAMPTON — Two weeks removed from their dramatic victory at the Amherst Invitational, the Amherst Regional girls varsity ultimate team added another accomplishment to their terrific spring season on Sunday.

For so long, the cities of Amherst and Northampton have been ultimate Frisbee hot spots. Talent pours out of the area, starting at the youth level and reaching the collegiate world at UMass. If the fact that the Amherst Regional and Northampton High ultimate teams compete for state titles every year wasn’t enough to stamp the area’s success, having double-digit players in the professional Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) certainly is.

AMHERST – As dark clouds rolled over the fields behind McGuirk Alumni Stadium on Sunday afternoon, the Amherst Regional and Four Rivers Charter School girls ultimate varsity teams put on a show during the Girls Division 1 championship at the 2025 Amherst Ultimate Invitational. Tied 8-8 after regulation, both teams traded possessions for at least 20 minutes in sudden-death overtime, before the Hurricanes finally broke through and found the end zone to win 9-8 and punch their ticket to the National Invitational Tournament.

It doesn’t get much better than the season the Northampton girls ultimate team had in 2024. A year ago, the Blue Devils won the Division 1 state tournament, earned the right to travel to Rockford, Ill. last June and turned in an impressive fifth-place finish at the national tournament. They also captured first place at the Amherst Invitational – the longest annual ultimate tournament in the United States – for the first time in program history.
