UMass men's lacrosse takes aim at another ranked foe
AMHERST - With the head of one ranked team already on its trophy wall, the No. 11 University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team will try to add another Saturday when it hosts No. 13 Ohio State at noon at Garber Field.
The Buckeyes (3-0) arrive in Amherst after beating Detroit and Mercer to open the season. They stunned No. 3 North Carolina 13-8 on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio.
UMass (2-0) upset No. 12 Army 8-5 in its season opener.
Ohio State features two players that are familiar to the Minutemen. Senior Zach Rodgers started his career at UMass and led the team with 18 assists as a freshman in 2008. Rodgers transferred after his sophomore season and hasn't played in the first three games this season.
Sophomore Jeff Tundo is the brother of former UMass players Gene and Matt Tundo. Jeff Tundo leads OSU in goals (seven) and points (10) this season.
UMass junior Art Kell was the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week after amassing two goals and eight assists in last week's win over Hartford.
WOMEN'S HOOP REGULAR SEASON FINALE - The Minutewomen (7-21, 3-10) are tied for 11th with George Washington in the Atlantic 10 heading into their final regular season game.
Because the Colonials won the teams' regular-season meeting, the Minutewomen need to beat La Salle on Saturday at 2 p.m., and have the Colonials fall to Saint Joseph's on Sunday at noon to finish 11th.
All Atlantic 10 Tournament games are at Tsongas Arena in Lowell beginning March 4.
Saturday is senior day as UMass will honor Megan Zullo, Stephanie Lawrence and Cerie Mosgove prior to the game.
SOFTBALL IN CALIFORNIA - The UMass softball team, which went 2-3 last weekend in Florida, will face quite a slate this weekend in the Cathedral City Classic in California.
The Minutewomen take on No. 14 California at 6:30 p.m. and No. 7 Washington at 11:30 p.m. in a doubleheader tonight.
It doesn't get much easier after that. UMass faces No. 19 Oklahoma State at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. It's doubleheader Sunday is against No. 11 Texas at noon followed by a 2 p.m. game against unranked Fresno State, which is a perennial power.
UMass is 5-35 all-time against the teams it will face this weekend.
TRACK AT NEW ENGLANDS - After finishing fourth and seventh respectively at the Atlantic 10 meet last weekend, the UMass men's and women's indoor track teams head to Boston University for the New England Championship meet. Northampton native Zachary Koncki, who won the A-10 long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 3.5 inches, will try to add a New England title to his collection.
KEEPING MOMENTUM - Already 2-0 under new coach Angela McMahon, the UMass women's lacrosse team will try to improve to 3-0 when it travels to Albany Saturday to play Siena at 1 p.m.
