UMass men's lacrosse wins in overtime, to host CAA final

Anthony Biscardi’s goal 2 minutes, 37 seconds into overtime capped the No. 3-seed University of Massachusetts men’s lacrosse team’s come-from-behind 10-9 win over No. 2 Penn State, Wednesday in the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament at State College, Pa.

But the junior midfielder was far from the only hero for the Minutemen (10-4), who will play No. 4 Delaware, Saturday at 7 p.m. at Garber Field for the championship.

The Blue Hens, who lost to UMass 11-5 on Friday, upset No. 1 Hofstra 10-9, Wednesday on Long Island. The winner will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

There was plenty of credit to go around for the Minutemen, who trailed 4-1 at halftime before coming to life in the second half.

Junior Art Kell gets some for scoring four goals, all in the second half to lead the comeback.

Junior goalie Tim McCormack gets some for his 14 saves as does the face-off tandem of Anthony Torresco and Greg Rushing for winning 10-of-14 second-half faceoffs after winning just 1-of-7 in the second half.

"A bunch of guys stepped up, scoring goals and winning faceoffs and the way the defense responded. McCormack was excellent," UMass coach Greg Cannella said. "It was a total team effort.

The most unlikely hero was freshman goalie Reed Goodhue. Prior to Wednesday, his career consisted of just over four minutes of action in two mop-up appearances. Unlike in ice hockey, when a lacrosse goalie gets a penalty, he has to serve it himself. McCormack took one of two penalties with 1:46 remaining, forcing Goodhue into the game.

The rookie only faced one shot, a close attempt by Matt Mackrides, but he stopped it and allowed the Minutemen to kill the critical two-man, man-down scenario.

"We just gave him a pat on the back and said go in there and do your best," Cannella said. "Reid works very hard. I couldn't be happier for him. He came through."

The win was UMass' third overtime victory in the last month.

Penn State dominated the first half and led 4-1 at intermission. But after going scoreless in the second quarter, UMass scored three times in the first five minutes of the third to tie the score.

From there the game went back and forth. The Minutemen pulled ahead 9-7 but the Nittany Lions scored the last two goals in regulation to set the stage for Biscardi's game winner.

"We knew it would have to be exciting for us to beat those guys here," Cannella said. " I've been proud of this group all year. They've given us great effort. I'm happy for them. They got what they deserved."
