AMHERST — Another game, another dominant performance by the Amherst College women’s basketball team.

But this wasn’t just any game and Amherst advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament quarterfinals with an 82-48 triumph over Stevens Institute of Technology, Friday night at LeFrak Gymnasium.

No. 4 Amherst (29-1) will face No. 16 Rochester (23-5) Saturday at 6 p.m. at LeFrak. Rochester beat Bowdoin, 60-53, in the other third-round game and last appeared in the Elite Eight in 2010.

A win would send Amherst to the national semifinals in Columbus, Ohio, on March 19. The championship game is April 4 in Indianapolis.

“It was a fun game to be part up and our defense really stepped up,” Amherst coach G.P. Gromacki said. “We made our shots, went up at the half and coasted from there.”

Amherst is 13-1 at home this season and has lost only once at LeFrak since Jan. 31, 2009.

Ali Doswell led all scorers with 19 points for Amherst. Meredith Doswell added 17, Haley Zwecker 16 and Jaimie Renner 13.

“I am just feeding off the energy the team is bringing to this post season,” Ali Doswell said.

Amherst scored 44 points in the paint, while its bench outscored Stevens, 25-16.

Stevens (23-7) had no answer for Amherst’s fast break. Amherst scored points in bunches and played shutdown defense.

Kaitlyn Astel led Stevens with 13 points and Megan Brown added 10.

“We fought the entire 40 minutes,” Stevens coach Megan Haughley said. “We came in here knowing their skill level. They were the better team.”

Amherst took an 80-38 lead with just under six minutes remaining.

“We have so many different options and we distributed the ball well,” Gromacki said.

“They were phenomenal,” Haughley said. “We had a good season and knew we could compete with teams here in the Big Dance.”

Amherst, which has won its last eight games, led by as many as 23 points in the third quarter when Jamie Renner’s field goal made it 57-24. The lead expanded to 69-33 after three quarters.

With the big lead, Amherst played a possession game. It ate up the clock with quick passes and waited until the shot clock was low before taking a shot.

Amherst went on a 24-10 second-quarter run and led 45-22 at halftime.

Amherst vaulted to a 22-12 first-quarter lead as Ali Doswell and Zwecker combined for 13 points during that quarter.

Rochester 60, Bowdoin 53 — Rochester used a 16-4 fourth-quarter run to pull away. Kayla Kibling led the Yellowjackets with 16 points, while Bowdoin’s Shannon Brady led all scorers with 22.
