CHARLEMONT — There may not be snow this weekend at Berkshire East, but there will be sledding at the annual “Cardboard Classic,” followed by the eighth annual Chowder Fest on Sunday at the ski resort.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., teams will come down the mountain in sleds made of only cardboard, duct tape, paint and imagination. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and registration forms and rules are available from customer service. The event is free to the public, and prizes will be awarded for the fastest sled, the best sled design and the best organization’s design.

The eighth annual Chowder Fest, sponsored by the Friends of the Charlemont Fairgrounds, takes place inside the Berkshire East Ski Lodge from 4 to 6:30 p.m.

Chowder contestants bring in at least two gallons of chowder in electric slow-cookers, and participants sample the chowders and vote for their favorite. Prizes are given to the top vote-getter.

Admission to the festival costs $7, and proceeds go to benefit the town’s Yankee Doodle Days summer festival. There is also a 50/50 drawing and a drawing for $50 worth of state lottery scratch tickets.

Those who want to compete by bringing chowder may register online at www.yankeedoodledays.com or email hicksff@verizon.net.
