EASTHAMPTON — Police arrested a local man Sunday night on charges related to a domestic disturbance after an extensive search involving three departments and a helicopter.
The 50-year-old man, whom police did not identify, is expected to be arraigned Monday in Northampton District Court on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, threat to commit a crime, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, resisting arrest and a default warrant.
Easthampton Police responded to a 911 report of a disturbance at a residence in the Windsor Circle area around 8:20 p.m. The caller said a man with a knife was threatening people inside the house.
When police arrived, they were told the man was barricaded inside the house, armed with a knife. Officers evacuated several residents of the home, including young children, and tried to make contact with the man.
But after searching the home, police discovered the man had jumped from a second-floor window and run.
Police set up a perimeter and called in reinforcements from Southampton Police and State Police, who brought a dog and a helicopter. During the search, police received several reports of a man running through people’s backyards.
Easthampton officers eventually collared the suspect in a wooded area near Plain and Strong streets and took him into custody. He was held overnight on $5,000 bail.
