HATFIELD — A minor electrical fire in a boy’s bathroom has delayed the opening of Smith Academy for two hours.
Hatfield Public Schools Superintendent John Robert said a staff member found the fire at 6 a.m. Thursday.
“There was no damage to the building, just some smoke, and so we called a delay,” Robert said.
The School usually opens at 7:30 a.m. and will instead be delayed until 9:30, he said.
Two Hatfield fire engines responded to the school. Hatfield Fire Chief Stephen P. Gaughan said the fire had extended to some wood and that an electrician was called in to secure the electrical components.
“Really no damage,” Gaughan said.
He said Northampton and Whately firefighters responded with mutual aid because of an initial report of fire in a ceiling, but that turned out not to be the case, according to Gaughan.
By 7:30 a.m., the windows had been opened to clear out the smoke and the situation was under control.
“The Fire department was here for all of about a half hour total,” Robert said.
There will be no effect on other Hatfield Schools.
Smith Academy has 191 students in Grades 7 to 12.
