CHICOPEE — Chicopee Police are investigating a multiple-vehicle crash that sent three drivers to the hospital as snow coated the roads early Monday morning.

“It was a pretty nasty one,” Chicopee Police Officer Michael Wilk said.

Three drivers were transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, one who appeared to suffer head injuries and remains in critical condition, Wilk said. The other two drivers were transported for less serious injuries, and at least one has since been released, he said.

Three vehicles — a Nissan Murano, Ford Taurus and Ford pickup truck — collided on Granby Road near Swol Street around 6 a.m. Monday.

Photos on the police Facebook page show the snow-covered road littered with debris. The Ford Taurus was smashed on both sides, while the Nissan Murano and pickup truck both had significant front-end damage, Wilk said, noting that the department’s accident reconstruction team is still trying to determine what happened.

“That’s a bad spot,” Wilk said. “We always tell people, especially in that area, they need to slow down. The way the curve is makes it especially dangerous, especially with bad weather.”

Granby Road was shut down between Columba Street and the Elks Lodge until shortly before 11 a.m.
