While I normally enjoy the political satire of cartoonist Matt Wuerker, I found the cartoon that appeared on the Gazette’s editorial page March 30 uncomfortable and upsetting.
Captioned “When Trump says he’d waterboard … and worse,” the cartoon depicted Trump “torturing” terrorist detainees with nonstop reruns of “The Apprentice,” and so on. That part was funny.
But the depictions of the prisoners, caricatures of apparently Middle Easterners with long hooked noses and beards, was not. It reminded me of the gross and highly exaggerated portrayals of Jews in the propaganda art of Hitler’s Germany. Life is hard enough these days without adding fuel to the fire with racist stereotypes.
