AMHERST – Organizers of an interfaith concert scheduled at the University of Massachusetts Amherst say they aim to unite people of many faiths under a common experience – music – rather than a single set of beliefs.
The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. April 14 at Bowker Auditorium at UMass. It will feature performances from three bands from three different religions: Walking About the Valley Band (Catholic), Unity Band (Islam) and the Jewish Community Band.
“We hope that through the common language of music, people with different beliefs can unite around similar religious experiences,” reads a post on the blog of the Religious Verism Association at UMass, a multifaith group which is organizing the event. “We hope that this model of interfaith gathering with the focus on experience could become a successful archetype of multi-faith events.”
The Religious Verism Association is a graduate student group that aims to help create understandings of various religions, according to its blog.
