AMHERST – A sidewalk, bicycle lane and portion of the travel lane on East Pleasant Street on the east side of Kendrick Park will be closed for an extended period as a project to put utilities below ground begins Monday.

Department of Public Works crews are starting the work on installing conduits and vaults to carry electric, cable, telephone and Internet lines near the south end of Kendrick Park, and then continuing north toward the intersection with Triangle Street and along Pray Street.

Once these conduits and vaults are in place, the utility companies will move their wires from overhead to underground.

The project is financed by a $1.5 million MassWorks Infrastructure Program grant the town received in October 2014.

The PVTA bus stop at Kendrick Park will be closed for the duration of this work, with riders advised to catch their buses near the corner of North Pleasant Street and Cowles Lane.

Two-way traffic will be maintained on East Pleasant for the duration of the project, but the travel lanes will be narrowed.
