Finches in the Snow

Ridgefield Road, Florence

Photograph and text by Larry Rankin, Northampton

One of the benefits of retirement is the opportunity to enjoy an unexpected snow day at home, watching the white fluff swirl through the air, adorn the woods behind the house, and entice the backyard birds to the feeders.

At this time of year, sizeable flocks of house and yellow finches dominate the feeding frenzy, including these two who paused for a moment on the patio railing Monday.

From the warmth of our sunroom and in the company of two inquisitive house cats, this image was made through the glass of the patio door with a hand-held digital SLR and telephoto lens.
