A strong first half pushed Pope Francis past the South Hadley boys lacrosse team, 12-6, on Friday in South Hadley.

The Tigers trailed 2-1 after the first period, but five goals in the second for the Cardinals put the game out of reach.

Jason Fernandes and Stephen Stratton both scored two goals and contributed an assist for South Hadley (0-1).

Pat Crotty and Griffin Fitzell also scored for the Tigers, while Corey Calkins made 15 saves.

Baseball

Smith Voke 14, Dean Tech 3 — Ryan York led the way for the Vikings (1-0) with three hits and three RBIs.

Matt Hewes added two hits and two RBIs while pitching 2 shutout innings of relief in the win.

Softball

Central 8, Granby 1— Emily Sawyer drove in the Rams’ only run in the sixth inning of a home loss.

Granby (0-1) had four errors and three hits.

Minnechaug 8, Amherst Regional 1 — Aliya Bartmon struck out nine in the Hurricanes’ season-opening road loss.

Jada Glasgow collected three hits for Amherst (0-1, 0-1 Valley).

Smith Vocational 27, Dean Tech 14 (5) — Stephanie Start launched a home run and had three hits in a mercy-rule shortened win on the road.

Samantha Von Haugg led the Vikings (1-0) with four hits, while Gabby Petlock also had three hits.

Girls lacrosse

Pope Francis 13, Amherst Regional 12 — The Hurricanes made a comeback attempt but fell at home.

Meghan Sharick had seven goals for Amherst (1-1).

Malia MacDonald added two goals and an assist, while Rachel Kawall scored her first varsity goal. Laney Morse chipped in with two goals.

Savannah Robinson made eights saves in net, while Maddie Rodriguez had four blocks and grabbed three ground balls.

Granby 10, Chicopee Comp 5 — Kate Sarnacki opened the season with five goals in the Rams’ road win.

Julia Frappier added three goals and an assist for Granby (1-0, 1-0 Pioneer), while Kaeleigh Croteau made four saves.

Williston 19, Wilbraham and Monson 5 — Olivia Bonavita scored six goals and dished out three assists in a road win.

Meg Szawlowski Leeds) added five goals and an assist for the Wildcats (2-0), and Madison Fulcher-Melendy (Easthampton) contributed three goals and an assist.
