Texting ban crackdown does not go far enough

Re: “Police to ramp up texting law enforcement” (Gazette, April 4). I was glad to hear this news, but in my opinion we need to ban hand-held cell phones altogether.

This really is a public health issue.

Every day, I watch people in large vehicles attempt to navigate left turns with lots of pedestrian, bike and other motor vehicle traffic using 50 percent of their hands and probably less than that of their attention.

Given that the potential consequences of this behavior (which can include injury and death) are similar to DUI, the penalties should be similar.
