Matt York scored the game-winning run and pitched the final two innings of the Hampshire Regional baseball team’s 2-1 win in eight innings over St. Mary, Thursday in Westfield.

York singled to lead off the eighth inning and stole second.

York then took of for third on Everett Warner’s infield hit. The St. Mary’s defense overthrew the ball, and York went home.

Steve Moussette went 2 for 3 and Noah Batchelder had an RBI for the Raiders (2-0).

Chicopee Comp 5, Amherst 1 — Will Budington went 2 for 2 and drove in the only run in the fourth inning of a road loss for the Hurricanes (1-2).

Northampton 12, Pope Francis 4— Hunter Salem struck out 10 in a complete-game victory and drove in two runs with two hits in the Blue Devils’ season opener.

Tyler McCallumore led Northampton (1-0) with three hits and three RBIs, while Devin Kellogg and Tim Horton both had two hits.

“They issued a ton of walks. We had a good combination of patience and aggressiveness on good pitches,” Northampton coach Mark Baldwin said. “We were attacking fastballs early in the count. The ball was in play all day.”

Mahar 8, South Hadley 6 — Adam Pilachowski had a triple and three RBIs, while Mario Olivera added three hits for the Tigers (1-1) in the loss.

Frontier Regional 8, Smith Academy 1 — Noah Barnes fanned four in the complete-game win in South Deerfield.

Brandon Bryant, Kyle Spencer and Riley Baker each had two RBIs for the Red Hawks.

Kevin Banas took the loss for the Falcons (0-2).

Hopkins Academy 9, Athol 3 — Mike Curran drove in three runs on two hits in a home win.

John Earle and Brett Morrison also had two hits for Hopkins (3-0).

Easthampton 9, Turners Falls 6 — Austin Kuenzel hit a three-run home run in a road win.

Brandon Bennett had three hits for Easthampton (1-1).

Softball

Pope Francis 24, Renaissance 0 (5) — Renee Wilda had four hits, scored four times and drove in three runs as the Cardinals cruised past the Phoenix in a mercy-rule shortened game.

Alexa Keough allowed just three hits and didn’t walk anyone while striking out seven to each the win.

Sydney Brosseau added three hits, three runs and four RBIs for Pope Francis (1-1).

Longmeadow 5, South Hadley 0 — Abby Edge had two hits, while Kate Bishop, Karley Rogers and Nicole Niemiec each had one hit but the Tigers (1-2) fell at home.

Taconic 5, Frontier Regional 2 — Eighth-grader Natalie Denkiewicz had two hits, including a double, in her varsity debut, but the Red Hawks lost on the road.

Hannah Adams also had two hits for Frontier (0-2).

Mohawk 23, Smith Vocational 0 (5) — Avalon Darby had the Vikings’ only hit in a road loss.

Boys lacrosse

South Hadley 17, West Springfield 2 — Pat Crotty scored five times in the Tigers’ road win.

Griffin Fitzell and Marcus Larrier added four goals each for South Hadley (2-2).

Corey Calkins stopped five shots in net for the Tigers.

Girls lacrosse

Minnechaug 14, Belchertown 3 — Audrey Duhaime had two goals, while Kate Bowers added one but the Orioles (1-2) fell at home.

Kailey Pacheco made five saves for Belchertown.

The Falcons led 12-2 at the half.

Northampton 14, West Springfield 9 — The Blue Devils stayed unbeaten after a home win over the Terriers.

Megan McCarthy scored nine goals for Northampton (4-0) while Abby Baldwin had seven goals and four assists.

Sophie Melcher added four goals and three assists.

Bridget Harrington made 10 saves.

East Longmeadow 15, Amherst Regional 8 — Meghan Sharick had four goals, Malia MacDonald added two and Gianna Catalano and Malina Kern each had one but the Hurricanes (1-2) fell at home.

Savannah Robinson and Taya Mathers split time in goal and each made three saves.

Boys volleyball

Central 3, Belchertown 0 — Andrew Duquette had 10 assists, two aces and two kills, while Hitchul Chung finished with three kills in the 25-22, 25-22, 25-13 loss at home.

Anthony Hosmer added two aces, eight kills and three blocks in defeat.
