SUNDERLAND — A black bear cub apparently avoided injury Tuesday night after being hit by a car on Route 116. Sunderland Police report that the cub, struck near Plumtree Tree Lane around midnight, has been seen and appears to be uninjured.
The mother bear was able to carry the cub into the woods and disappeared following the accident, according to the department’s Facebook page. Michelle Duguay, the department’s dispatcher, said the bears were seen by a resident this morning. The department sent out an environmental police officer to check on it, but the pair was gone on arrival.
“We’re definitely happy the cub is doing well,” said Duguay. “We appreciate the public’s help in calling and letting us know so that we could direct the EPO to the area.”
Duguay added that residents should be aware spring has arrived and that these animals are out and about.
“Drive carefully,” she said.
