GLOUCESTER — A Belchertown diver died Saturday morning off the coast of Gloucester during a scuba diving trip.
Peter Piemonte, 61, was diving with two other people off Eastern Point in Gloucester when he didn’t surface as he normally should have. He was an experienced diver, according to Essex District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Carrie Kimball Monahan.
Piemonte was unresponsive when he was brought to the surface by one of the people he was diving with, she said.
“They were providing CPR and whatnot when they brought him to the surface,” Kimball Monahan said Sunday.
The Coast Guard and Gloucester Emergency Services responded to the scene and transported Piemonte to Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester, where he was pronounced dead, Kimball Monahan said.
State Police assigned to the Essex District Attorney’s Office responded following the man’s death.
“A cause of death hasn’t been determined, yet,” said Kimball Monahan. “But it can be assumed that he drowned because he didn’t resurface from the water.”
