Nurses wanted

Linda Manor Extended Care,  349 Haydenville Road (Route 9), Leeds will host a career fair for nurses May 4 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Information will be available on positions for registered nurses, licensed nurses and aides.

There will be on-site interviews and applications as well as tours of the facility.

Linda Manor Extended Care Facility is a non-profit organization that has been operating in the Pioneer Valley area since 1989. It provides short-term rehabilitation, long-term skilled nursing care, respite care, and specialized Alzheimer’s and dementia care. Hospice services also are available.

Seminars set oncare for the aging

Linda Manor Assisted Living, 345 Haydenville Road, Leeds, will host seminars on caring for an aging relative May 11 at noon and 5:30 p.m. and May 12 at 5:30 p.m.

The event will feature advice from Joan Roche, a board-certified clinical nurse specialist in gerontological nursing and a former associate professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Topics will include how to recognize signs of deteriorating health; understanding the stages of Alzheimer’s disease; evaluating care options including in-home care, assisted living and skilled nursing care; how to talk to a relative or spouse about health and safety concerns and assisted living.

Each event will include a buffet lunch or dinner.

Skin cancer screening at CDH

The Mass General Cancer Center at Cooley Dickinson Hospital on Locust Street, Northampton, will host its annual skin cancer screening clinic May 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The goal is to catch the early signs of skin cancer. Local dermatologists and physician assistants will provide skin assessments and prevention education.

To make an appointment, call 582-2710. The clinic location will be provided at the time the appointment is made. Appointments will be made on a first-come, first-served basis as space is limited.

Medical grants for kids’ care

The United Healthcare Children’s Foundation (UHCCF) is seeking grant applications from Massachusetts families in need of financial assistance to pay for their children’s health care treatments, services or equipment not covered, or not fully covered, by their commercial health insurance plan.

Qualifying families can receive up to $5,000 per grant with a lifetime maximum of $10,000 per child to help pay for services such as physical, occupational and speech therapy, counseling, surgeries, prescriptions, wheelchairs, orthotics, eyeglasses and hearing aids.

Children must be 16 years of age or younger and families must meet economic guidelines and have a commercial health insurance plan.

Grants are available for medical expenses families have incurred 60 days prior to the date of application as well as for ongoing and future medical needs. Families do not need to have insurance through United Healthcare to be eligible.

Parents or legal guardians may apply for grants at www.UHCCF.org. There is no application deadline.

Hospice volunteer training

Hospice Life Care, a program of the Holyoke Visiting Nurses Association, seeks individuals to join its volunteer program.

Training will be held on four Fridays: May 13, 20, 27 and June 3 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m at a local nursing facility.

Hospice volunteers act as confidantes and companions to terminally ill patients and their families by visiting them at home and in nursing facilities throughout Hampden and Hampshire counties.
