AMHERST – A man who apparently was under the influence of alcohol was arrested after he allegedly forced his way into a downtown home early Tuesday.  A resident called police about the intruder.

Aidan Hubbard, 21, of Higganum, Connecticut, was arrested at 4:21 a.m. at a Cottage Street home on charges of breaking and entering during the nighttime to commit a felony, disturbing the peace, resisting arrest and assault and battery on a police officer, said Detective Jamie Reardon.

Hubbard allegedly entered the home at which he did not belong and caused a disturbance before police arrived.

“Alcohol is suspected to be a factor,” Reardon said.

Cottage Street residents have complained in the past about drunken behavior in their neighborhood.

Intoxicated college-age people have gotten into Amherst homes in the past, often leaving before police respond, but periodically being taken into custody. In 2014, a man was arrested after passing out in a bed in a child’s room in a home on Main Street where he was observed by residents when they awoke.
