DEERFIELD — A Florence man faces charges of operating under the influence of an intoxicating substance after he allegedly smoked a joint as he was about to leave work, failed to stop at a stop sign and was then arrested.

According to the Deerfield Police Department Facebook page, Officer Brent Griffin saw a vehicle pull out of Yankee Candle Way at 2:20 a.m. and pass a stop sign without stopping.

Griffin stopped the driver and noticed that he appeared to be under the influence of marijuana. According to Griffin, the driver told him that he had smoked an entire joint at 2:15 a.m. in the parking lot when he got out of work before beginning his commute home.

Officer Jennifer Bartak assisted, and the officers determined he was under the influence of marijuana. He was arrested for operating while under the influence of drugs, failing to stop for a stop sign, a lights violations and possession of a dangerous weapon — a 30-inch sword.

The man was not identified, and Deerfield police could not immediately be reached for comment. The man was scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Greenfield District Court.
