NORTHAMPTON — One of the more upscale Dunkin’ Donuts shops in the area has closed its doors on Main Street, ending a 10-year run in a prominent downtown location.

The coffee shop opened in 2006 at 273 Main St. which earlier had been home to the former B-Side Records. The Dunkin’ Donuts sign was taken down this month and the storefront windows remain covered.

The shop was operated by the Sardinha family, the regional owner of Dunkin’ Donuts stores, including one that is currently under construction in Williamsburg. Attempts to reach the owners and Dunkin’ Donuts representatives were unsuccessful Thursday.

Francis Johnson, of Northampton, co-owns the building and said the shop closed earlier this month. He said the space is still under lease and that he is not aware of any prospective new tenants.

“Something else will go in there, but I don’t have any idea for the moment,” he said.

The Main Street site was one of five in the city where the business sold coffee, pastries and sandwiches. Three others are on King Street, including one that stands alone as a store, while a fourth is on Pleasant Street.

Founded in 1950 in Quincy by William Rosenberg, Dunkin’ Donuts is part of the Dunkin’ Brands Group Inc. based in Canton. The company has more than 11,700 shops with locations in 43 countries, according to its website.
