HADLEY – A yellow Labrador retriever who escaped from a car its owner allegedly crashed while drunk is likely still on the loose, police said Tuesday.

The dog bolted after its owner crashed into a telephone pole on South Maple Street around 4 p.m. The 48-year-old Hadley resident’s vehicle left the road and hit the pole, bringing down power wires.

The Gazette originally reported the accident on Monday.

The operator was transported to Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton. The operator will be summoned to court for operating under the influence of alcohol, operating to endanger and a marked lanes violation.

Hadley Police Officer Ken Hartwright said to the best of his knowledge the dog has not yet been found, though the owners have been looking.

“We had a call in yesterday of a dog in that area roaming around,” he said. After responding to that call, officers could not locate the dog.  “If he’s still out there he’s roaming around in and out of the fields and the woods,” he added.
